Entropia Universe was the first MMO I ever played, known as Project Entropia back in the day. The idea behind it is that you deposit real world money into the game at the exchange rate of $1 to 10 PED, purchase armor, weapons, land and property with it, and then do as you please. You can make a profit, break even or lose all you've deposited depending on how smart you are. You can withdraw whatever you deposit into the game or make whilst playing it and you even get an Entropia Universe credit card.
Today Mindark, the company behind the game, broke some interesting news. Basically in the next game update, a huge shift in developmental direction will occur. Instead of Mindark developing new planets for the universe, they will act as the "parent company" for independent developers to develop planets for the game. The current planet that they developed is called Calypso, which will now be handed over to another developer. Along with the handing over, the universe will be upgraded to the Crytek 2 engine (very sexy) and the planet will see some changes compared to how it used to be.
All in all I think it's a very clever idea. Creating a universe and almost renting out planets for development is not necessarily unique, but I can't think of anyone who has done it before on this scale. Essentially it's a whole load of MMO's inside of an MMO. The Entropia Universe site lists some of the planets that are coming soon.
