Hey Guys,

First of all I hope im posting at the correct place. OK so my brother got a new power supply and we changed it. When trying to start the pc up the screen went straight to a black screen with error 99 on the bottom left skipping bios. So after doing a load of things we decided to get a new mobo. Plugged it in and it worked fine. So Im on a task now to try and get the mobo that's not working working! So from start we changed the power supply and from then it just went down hill. I reset cmos and bios. Had everything plugged out and started with just the power to mobo and on/off switch in. Still no go. Ive got no clue what it could mean. What Ive read is that it says that code means there was a short somewhere. What Im asking is can this be reset or bypassed as I cant see that a short on this mobo doesnt have some sort off safety feature to protect it.

Mobo - MSI H61M-P31/W8

Please assist guys. Fixable or throw away?

Question: what prompted you to buy a new power supply? Did the power supply die whilst attached to the "now departed" motherboard? If so, it could have been a singular event that wiped out both the motherboard and PSU.

I did a quick google search and there are 2 stories that recur.

1. The mobo is fried, throw away.

or

2. Error 99 is an input error through either the back panel or mobo headers.

What to do to check #2 is disconect your front usb, sound and SD card wires on the mobo. Remove all PCI and PCI-E cards. You know what? Unplug your harddrives as well. Go to the back of the machine and unplug everything except your keyboard and power cable. Now fire her up. If you still get the 99 error, I think #1 happened. If you get the "no boot device found" error, you need to start reconnecting wires and cards, one by one and rebooting each time until you figure out where the error is.
