Essential Xbox games

So, I've decided to give MMO's a rest in their current hardcore capacity (a large part of the reason being that I simply won't have the time to invest in MMO's as I do at the moment). That means that my Xbox is going to be getting a whole lot more love.

Now as you'll notice, I haven't used it very much at all, which means that my game collection is rather pathetic. So, my question is - what are the essential games that you feel every Xbox owner should own? ;)

Kiiiiiiiiiiiinda depends on what you like, though, doesn't it? :P

Personally, though, I'd recommend:

Gears of War 1 and 2 - Stuff Halo, this is the definitive Xbox shooter. ;P It's also got splitscreen campaign co-op and multiplayer, which is just one of the best things about console gaming for me.

Dead Space - I know it's out on PC too, but I think everyone would agree it's better suited to controller play. This was my favourite game of 2008, and I'm practically clawing down the walls for the sequel.

Borderlands - Another splitscreen legend, and a ridiculously fun game. The new DLC was absolutely top notch too, and there's more incoming.

Skate 2 - I don't know if you're into skating games, but this one's the king. It's also got really rad hot-seat party play features.

Thanks!

I'm pretty much into anything really. Minus horror. I'm a pussy :D

Didn't realise Skate 2 is so highly praised. Think I'll definitely have to mission to an Incredible Connection and pick it up then!

Five years ago, I'd never have thought I'd be into skating games, but there you have it. I've played a bunch of the Tony Hawk games, as well as the first Skate title, but Skate 2 really nailed it. It's just a brilliant game.

Well - To me it's not so much titles, but rather having a variety of genres when you're not fully into a specific one...

I think its important to have the following genres (my collection and similar ones underneath each):

1) An Arcade Racer
  • NFS prior to pro street/shift
  • Burnout

2) Racing Simulator
  • Grid
  • Forza

3) A Shooter (if you can aim FPS on console, which I can't)
  • Halo
  • Gears

4) Acrobatic
  • Assassin's creed
  • Mirror's Edge
  • Prince of Persia

5) RPG
  • Fable2

6) A 30min no brainer/time filler while waiting for mates and/or a date.
  • Sega Rally
  • Naruto

orly?

I see Skate2 on special at IC for R99. Wondering if I should grab it + Bad Company @ R160.

How could I forget Burnout? But Burnout Revenge, not Paradise.

Paradise was *spit*.

@ Voicy: DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH. That's an epic deal.

When I still only had Xbox1 I spent an entire night with an in-real-life hot girl, playing the same burnout track over and over. She beat me in the 1 round, so I said - jokingly - best ouf of 47. She took the challenge. I won 24/23 ... but only just.

Burnout = <3

fook me...

dude theres a shit load.

Batman AA for sure.
Mass effect
Oblivion
Guitar Hero (multiplayer fun)
Bioshock
Assasins Creed 1&2

Thanks for the other suggestions ;)

Mass Effect is definitely on my list. As is Unreal Tournament III, as I'm a huge Unreal Tournament fan :p

Have you played UT3 on another platform? I personally was very disappointed with it.

I've played it on my mate's Xbox. It's not the best game ever, but I quite enjoyed it. There's just something about the series that keeps me coming back for more.
