Experiencing high latency - Telkom

I am experiencing some high latencies lately.

I have called Telkom twice and everytime it is the same story, refresh ports and reset line. It does not help at all.

Pinging local sites with an extremely high latency.

Internationally it is not improving.

Any ideas what I can do?

Yeah that is your exchange or something on route causing problems. Not much you can do except keeping bugging who ever you get your ADSL line from.

Yep, I phoned Telkom today and they said the exchange is congested. It is funny because I never had this problem before, did my community discover torrents all at the same time? First time I had ever had problems with Telkom... I fear for what awaits me.

The same is happening to me, only I'm running at a steady 9kbs !

This is what's happening:

I got Crapkom to send out an engineer the other day, a very nice guy. Anyway he, looked at my line and then told me what's up. Because Crapkom is running that increased data bundle promotion it is putting a lot of strain on the exchange in certain areas. So to stabilize the line they have to cut down certain lines and their speed. It just so happens that you and myself are taking the brunt of the burden on the exchange !

How can we fix this? We can't, so basically Telkom have said **** you and we can't do **** about it ...

So we are paying for a service we are not receiving? Well, I always wanted to try the Cell C speedstick...

How can they throttle their paying customers?? I have also noticed an increase in my latency. While i enjoy the extra cap, I am not impressed by being throttled for some person that can get the service for "free". That is outragous.

Why would they not?

They know we have no one else to run too, I've also been having issues with them and so are some of my mates.
Its actually rediculous that we pay what we do for the shit service they provide, but there is nothing really we can do.
At least the extra data bundle promo ends soon as far as I know.

Congestion through exchanges is inevitable, infrastructure that is designed to handle X amount of Throughput is forced to deal with X x 2 Amount of Throughput.
Your latency tests are unrealisticly high though, I would log a call and ask them to check the D-Slam on your Exchange
TBH, no ISP will throttle customers selectively unless specified in an Uncapped Contract, so no use getting flustered about something a technician told you, FYI, Technicians are not briefed on Corporate Policy so they would not be able to give you this type of information in the first place

Well I did phone them and a fault has been reported. Apparently the exchange is overloaded. The person mentioned that the normal network load is 1 and the current load is 4... I assume it is Gigabytes a second, you would know more about this kind of thing. :)

Welcome to the club.

I've been having the same problem for more than 3 months now. Now they're already loadshedding traffic between our exchange and the one in Durbanville. They're signing up too many ADSL customers without upgrading their equipment to accomodate the capacity. That is all. We're pretty much screwed unless they decide to upgrade and if your exchange is not "profitable" enough for them, they won't do jackshit. I know it's a tough one, but that's Telkom for you.

Oh, and if you think 500ms is bad, you should have seen mine. Was 1000ms+ some nights, constant, and even went up to 1500ms some nights and it got to a point where I couldn't even browse the net, let alone play games (LOL, with 1000 ping locally).

I've been hounding them day in and day out, and will do until they eventually upgrade it. The businesses in our area are starting to complain now as well, so we're all working together to get Telkom to pull some finger. It's not easy I tell you. These okes are harder to deal with than trying a kid to eat his veggies. Just the other day, one of the techs actually outright bullshit me by saying there's nothing wrong with their network. We got a specialist out on site and he confirmed that there's massive capacity issues in the area. Go figure.

I must easily have reported my line 30+ times in a time span of a month. EASILY!

All I can say is good luck. Phone them everyday. Go to the Telkom Direct shop. Phone them again. Claim reimbursement for inusability. Set a DSLAM on fire. Maybe one day something happens.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue. I've been dealing with a manager at the service dept who has also confirmed my exchange is over utilized. I am really worried that this issue gets left unchecked.

May as well kiss my BF3 preorder goodbye since it wont be playable. Surely if we get the numbers behind us we can get a response from telkom?

Everyone has to complain for them to listen. It also depends on who you talk to. Some of the guys will just tell you "Sure, we'll report/excalate/fix it" and then nothing happens.

In the last couple of months I actually, to the full extent, realized how bad Telkom is and how horrible their service delivery is. Sorry, I meant what service delivery?!

Wish you okes the best of luck. It's absolute BS paying for something you're not getting.

Great! More problems on they way.

Telkom looks set to increase their standard ADSL data caps on 1 October, and introduce another Do Broadband service called “do Basic”

I am flabbergasted.

You will not believe what I am about to tell you, a Telkom technician showed up. Tested my line and explained to me that they cannot help if the exchange is congested. The bloke knew what he was talking about and explained that the extra bandwidth promotion is the cause of the problem. He gave me new filters and replaced a few merters of my line which he said whole and should be fixed.

I must say that I am impressed, I phoned and logged a fault Sunday and the technician showed up today.

That's pretty much my experience as well. Very nice technician but he isn't allowed to do shit.
