external hdd giving issues?

I have a samsung g2 portable 640gb external 2.5" hdd, which my tv and 1 pc pick up with no issues, however my main pc, always wants to format the drive as it can't seem to read what is on it. Is the drive busy packing up (if so who wants to buy a 2nd hand hdd that works 66% correctly, lol), or is my pc just being daft?

btw both pc's run win7, and my pc on a very rare occasion does pick up the hdd, and when I run acronis and scan the drive it after 40-80min does pick it up
 
Some kind of surface scan would be useful...even the built in windows one...plus SMART data (CrystalDiskinfo etc). Post the SMART info first...if the disk is dodgy then a full surface scan could kill it completely...
 
This might seem like a stupid question but are you always plugging it into the front usb port by any chance ?

Could also be the chassis ,can you remove the drive if the warranty is past and connect it directly to your pc and check it.
