Facebook has just announced that it will acquire popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp for a staggering $16 billion. Revealed today in an SEC filing and by founder Mark Zuckerberg, the social networking giant will bolster its mobile messaging efforts by acquiring the company for $4 billion in cash and $12 billion worth of Facebook shares. For those unfamiliar with the service, WhatsApp offers real-time messaging across iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Android devices outside of traditional SMS messaging.

According to the announcement, WhatsApp is used by over 450 million people, 70% of which use it daily. What's more, WhatsApp's usage reportedly rivals that of SMS messaging worldwide.

"WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable," said Zuckerberg.

Of course, this isn't the first time Facebook has spent a large sum on a popular mobile service — in 2012, the company paid a whopping $1 billion for Instagram.

I wonder if this means they're going to implement Facebook into Whatsapp in some way?

Apparently the guy who made whatsapp went for an interview at Facebook 4 years ago and was rejected, and now look.

As they say when one door closes it's just so another can open I have a similar story well. Minus the billions of dollars

It's apparently $1 per year.

I think that's just a tactic to try and get people to pay for it. Whenever it gets close to my annual renewal they remind me that Whatsapp will soon expire if I don't purchase it, and as soon as that day comes (when it should stop working), the renewal date changes to the following year.

Yea same i'v never paid for it and it never seems to expire.

I dont think facebook will change it in any major ways, just some Facebook integration probably

The purchase makes sense; however the amount is what I am questioning. Although I can personally say that if they were vehement in making us pay for the year subscription; I would have absolutely no qualms in doing os

worst part is now they will have my phone number fking cunts now I am just pissed off.

But I recon its time to start searching for alternatives.... maybe ChatOn.

Just please leave Whatsapp how it is Facebook, I kinda like it. It doesn't need any fancy new features.
