So I have nothing that is capable of running Fallout 4, and I have never played any of the previous Fallout games (please don't hate me), so I was thinking that I should have a go at one of the older ones, what do you guys think though, Fallout 3 or New Vegas?

I would strongly, from my point of view, suggest Fallout 3. I liked it more than New Vegas, not that NV was bad, it wasnt. Again, from my pov, play Fallout 3 then NV.

Personally i liked 3 more than FNV. New Vegas is a great game but the setting just puts me off for some reason. FO3 felt more Fallout'ish than FNV.

Good news is they both cost almost nothing by now so grab Fallout 3, play it until you're sick of it and then move on to NV and do the same.

Well, they sound like really big games, and I have very little spare time for gaming, so I don't know if I'll manage both and it'll take me a long time to get through whichever I choose, although if I do play say FO3, and I really enjoy it, I'll most likely play NV as some stage as well.

Well like others pointed out. You can grab the whole collection for the same price as FO3 Goty on steam.

Just noticed this on the steam page though.

Notice: Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later.

I can't recall playing it on XP.

Dude get Fallout 3, its far more epic of a story. You start the game being born and growing up as a child. Nuff freakin said!! Its epic epic epic especially the end game. Well my endgame anyway, theres a few endings....

Im playing NV at the moment, I love it too its exactly like Fallout 3 with a few improvements here and there but its just lacking in the story for me. Still loving it though.

Check what I found on the PSN store!

Looks like I'm buying both

Ah scratch that, it's not the games, it's DLC bundles

New Vegas. Hands down.

Far better writing (IMO, thanks to Obsidian) weapon mods, iron sights, better melee weapons, better companion system, cooler factions etc.

I'm actually playing NV as I type this.

Fallout 3 is by no means a bad game, it is amazing but NV improves on it in almost every conceivable way. I'm not the biggest fan of the forced character backstory in F3 (although it was awesome the first time). In NV it's mostly left up to the player.

Both games also have a crapload of mods to make them play/look better.

Edit: matt. Whichever game you choose, rather try for PC if you can. If you have to go the console route get it on X360. Lots of issues with both games on PS3: stuttering, freezing etc.

Thanks for the heads up, I was just debating ps3 vs xbox360

Yeah, the PS3 version was ridiculously buggy, practically game breaking. I can't recall it being that bad on X360, but a lot of it can be fixed with mods on PC, so there's that.

Fallout 3:

Better world.
More fun exploration.
Lame story (this is Bethesda, after all)
Limited RPG elements.
Very limited choice and consequence.

New Vegas:

Somewhat bland world.
Lots of RPG goodness such as choice and consequence, etc.
Much bigger focus on RPGing, almost on par with Fallout 1 and 2.
Much better story (written by Obsidian, who blow Bethesda's writers right out of the water)
Awesome companions with backstories

i played F3 on pc years ago and NV on Ps3, after a few patches the game did not have as many issues if i remember correctly. just save often in case S.H.T.F
