Square Enix has announced that its latest blockbuster RPG, Final Fantasy XIII, has shipped over 5 million units worldwide, with the North American and European releases of the game accounting for over half of the total this week.

The publisher is calling the international release of Final Fantasy XIII a success, after shipping over 3 million units to North American and European territories in time for the launch this week on March 9th.

The game’s release last year in Japan on December 17th makes up the rest of that 5 million units shipped amount, although it should be noted that these figures represent the total number of copies delivered (shipped) to stores around the world, rather than the number of units sold direct to consumers.

Those numbers will no doubt be waved around in our collective faces in the coming days, once Square Enix collates the sales figures and approves them for public consumption.

The publisher was also keen to announce that, thanks to Final Fantasy XIII, the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole has now sold a combined 96 million units worldwide.

In case you hadn’t heard, Final Fantasy XIII released around the world this week on Xbox 360 and PS3.

You can find out all about this title, as well as compare the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions with a comparison video, via El33tonline’s previous coverage of Final Fantasy XIII, for all kinds of screenshots, videos and information you didn’t know you needed, but certainly do.

About 10hrs in an I am enjoying it. Not sure how I feel about the paradigm system however, it feels a little chaotic atm. This and Tales of Vesperia are the best 2 JRPGs out on this current gen.

On the game being linear, well it is very much so, but it is a blessing and a curse. I read it opens up a bit muuuuuuch later. The world is pretty complex and a tad confusing, but it is making more sense as I go on.

Hey guys, im just wondering if there are any special editions in shops yet? cuz i just see the normal edition in stock. Ive also looked online like places like loot.co.za i just cant seem to find the special edition. Any insights?

I'm playing through now on the 360.

Its good, but not anywhere near FF VII or FF XII. If your a fan of the franchise, you should definitely get it, but I can't help but feel I got a bit caught up in the hype. Its seldom a game would end up in my candidates for top games of the year and most disappointing at the same time. Its still up for my personal best CGI movies of the year award though =)

Almost 7 hours into the game and i only have good things to say, it must be said im a bit bias when it comes to FF series :). As tehNihilist said it can become very chaotic the further you get into the game but for me that’s just one of the many fun parts. To me the paradigm system is well implemented and can make for some make or break situations in the game- i also found that the AI is so far well done . With regards to character development well im left as undecided, not far enough in the game to have a strong opinion.

Im an hour in and enjoying it. Not really into it yet but enjoying the scenery all the same! got the limited edition and it was really worth it. Artbook is beautiful and extensive. Although in the game it does feel like im running a very narrow long distance marathon with obstacles

Sadly that only changes at about Chapter 11 from what I have read. Seems they have gone for serious focus on story in this one with less initial detours.

I am now about 18hrs in and at Chapter 9 or 10 and am still enjoying it, but I think the older ones are still better. This one so far seems to be a lot of hit a miss on many levels, but still enjoyable.

I only about 2 hours in. Do you end up controlling more characters at a time later in or is it only 1 charcter throughout?

Im about 20 hours in on Chapter 11, you start free roaming now, place is really bad. im getting pwned :D

@Reznov You only control 1 char at a time, the paradigm system controls/determines all the actions ur party members execute

Try reading the dialog or reading the short prologue story (FFXIII Episode Zero) that Square Enix had released :) That should help clear any confusion about story...
As for FFXIII it is absolutely dazzling! Any person who dosent like it should bury themselves :p

I can understand why people will dislike this game. While I am happy that they are trying new things per iteration, I find this move away from certain traditional JRPG elements to be personally bothering.

I want some degree of exploration and control. I love the open world feel, while overwhelming, it is what I feel makes a large portion of any RPG experience. FFXIII just puts you on rails for 20hrs! That is FAR too long! Before they finally give you any real control. But this is a personal sentiment.

As far as the story goes I WAS reading ALL the dialogue and it was still fuzzy. I get it now, but it does not do a very good job ingame at explaining things initially. With all the advancements in story telling done in real-time in this latest generation of games, it is a little bit of a let down. While I absolutely LOVE my JRPG's, I feel that they are falling behind as far as advancing and progressing in many areas. They need to evolve, just like their western counterparts, while still remaining true to their roots. It is hard, but it is their job.

Played it at a friends place today best looking game I have ever seen . But I was seriously expecting more from Square-Enix I mean it took them 5 years to develop the game, I was seriously expecting something different a departure from the rest of the franchise. But it is just more of the same. Vanille must have the most annoying voice acting I have ever come across in any franchise, every time she opens her mouth I just want to stick a cork in it, one minute she has an accent the next she doesn't. And I have seen Wii rail shooters that are less linear than this then I hear you have to play about 20 hours before it becomes less linear? Come on I am not even willing to invest so much time just to get a improvement on the game. I also see the review scores for it is all over the place. Definitely bargain bin buy for me.

Square-Enix needs to come up with something new and fresh for the franchise its getting old fast.
