Final Fantasy 7 Remake - is the dream still alive?

And here’s the kicker: “so it’s very difficult to decide what we should we keep in and what we should take out.”

Hmmm. “Should”. Interesting choice of words, no?

We should probably keep in mind that the bloke's first language isn't English, so what he thinks he says and what we think we hear could be two different things. I don't think there's any worth in remaking the game - 49.5% of gamers would moan if they changed the slightest thing, and another 49.5% would moan if they didn't change something. 1% would actually be happy.

I would totally be a part of that 1%

But yes, the interview was obviously translated (the English isn't broken anywhere) - so the "should" and "will" and things like that are likely the interpreter's input.

Still, Square-Enix should simply say "Look, we're sorry, we're just not doing this, so get over it." But they haven't - and by all indications, they won't. I just think they're running the risk of pulling this trump card when it's simply too late, and the fans of the original are either dead or just don't care anymore.

I dont think it's going to happen as much as everybody wants it to. I mean this game was epic and i for one wouldnt want it to be touched except for a graphics over haul. If they are going to add new ideas, new systems etc then it might as well be a new game that they work on. The storyline to FF7 was amazing but its not like they cant make new games with better story lines. I for one prefer the later Final Fantasy story lines especially FFX.

And that's exactly what will most likely happen...

I'm divided over remakes myself. On one hand I agree that memories should stay memories (Duke Nukem Forever, anyone?).
On the other hand... high-def for one of the best games I've ever played...

even if they remake the game, the fanbase is not going to be the same, the game wont be the same and last time i checked no matter how good a remake is it never makes a profit period.

examples

Resident evil remake on gamecube (brilliant game, made at a loss)
mgs twin snakes , same story

goldeneye wii/ reloaded (technically not a remake but reimagined but still it doesnt have the same impact as the original)

and on and on and on

so i say ff addicts should just bin the remake idea and move on with their lives.

I dunno I think the HD remakes are good, in moderation. I am very Happy with Halo CE coz my original Xbox version doesn't run on my xbox via HDMI. Tomb Raider HD = Awesome as is God of War collection. Can't wait for MGS as I have fond memories of Sons of Liberty on Original Xbox and since I dont have a psp I havent had a chance Snake Eater and Peace walker. The list goes on and on. I think that these HD collections are making the publishers money else they wouldn't keep pumping them out.

Goldeneye Reloaded is the worst kind of HD remake; one that tries to re-imagine the original. Halo did it right - up the visuals, include co-op and BAM! Perfect remake.

I for one wish someone would make Kill Zone 1 HD so I can play it from the beginning and see if that makes KZ2 more interesting.

Damn I was about to pull out the DNF card. :)

I would enjoy playing a FF7 that had a graphical overhaul in the same style as the new Monkey Island games or Halo anniversary, with only very minor tweaks to iron out bugs and quality of life stuff. At the same time though I don't mind if they choose not to do this but rather just keep making new games, as long as they understand WHY people enjoyed those games and bring in the gameplay elements into new games.

Those are upscales that you are talking about m8, technically they're not considered remakes even though some pulishers call it that. a remake is usually a new engine mated to new graphics but based on the same storyline ie the games i mentioned and titles like goldeneye source, black mesa source, duke nukem reloaded etc

Fair enough, my bad.

God Of War Collection redid some parts of the rendering pipeline and used higher res textures so it wasn't quite an upscale but not the same level as Golden Eye/Halo CE.
