It's a fair point - but the Final Fantasy brand is pretty huge; poor sales kind of do indicate something is not right. BG&E and Psychonauts weren't established, popular brands, so their poor sales weren't really indicative of their content, more the fact that most consumers don't take risks on trying new things.
Because FF IS an established series combined with these sales figures, this is worrying. But then again, perhaps this is a wake up call to SquareEnix that something should be done to the formula that they are applying to the current generation of FF games.
I liked FFXIII, but it took a few hours to get into the game and appreciate the mechanics and battle mechanics of the game. The older games in the series obviously did something right, as there was never anything wrong with their sales (note that I am talking about VII to X). Perhaps there is something that they are missing, which gamers are now demanding.
I would like to play this one (as soon as I finish FFXIII) just to see what it is like.
30 hours is not a little time, its too fucking long. I was 38 hours in when my will to live exceeded my will to continue playing. I actually fell asleep during one of the boss battles...
That's the biggest problem I'm having with the game at the moment is that is extremely long winded. Dungeons go on for hours more than they should and their bland linear design doesn't exactly help.
A couple of days ago I finally reached the open plains area. I'm planning to power level there so that I can just bulldoze my way through dungeon enemy encounters and boss fights. I'm mostly interested in finishing the story at this point, but it looks like I'm only about 1/3 through the game.
I was hoping to finish it before XIII-2 since it at least looked like the were fixing a lot of the faults of XIII.
I think FFXIII-2's problem is FFXIII. So it might have improved every aspect of FF13 but people will still liken it to FF13 and hence might be wary to purchase.
I thought FFXIII wasn't bad but I think its just the expectation of the brand and its past titles that made so many people disappointed. I mean it was a solid game but certainly wasn't exceptional at anything, maybe besides the graphics.
Saying that though, I've preordered the game.
