Final Fantasy XIII Review (MyGaming)

I find this review a bit harsh especially since the reviewer has never played another FF before...I mean for me that score was rough...65% because you dont like the genre?

The fact that Ive never played another FF title is exactly why I chose to review this title. I looked at it not as someone with an expectation of the series heritage but as someone new wanting to be impressed.

I gave it 65% because the game play was unimaginative, the visuals where good for mostly static backgrounds, the controls where basic and the plot completely too long. Im all for a 30 hour epic where im on the edge of my seat for 15 of those. But a 60 hour game where Im hardly ever on the edge of my seat does not trill me. The only reason the game is that long is because the player spend hours upon hour upon hours fighting the same monsters over and over again. There is no fighting for the sake of progressing, just fighting for the sake of something to do. I actually fell asleep fighting one of the bosses because all input it needed from me was to push "auto" battle every couple of seconds.

Now this could be because Im use to wester RPG. Granted. However seeing as FF is expanding its horizons and went the JRPG 101 route it only serve as a testament to is failure as it failed to draw someone new into a genre which this new player had looked forward to exploring and has actually gone so far as to put the new player of JRPG's in general.

The game deserve praise in several sections, which i believe i gave, the characters are interesting in a weird Anime kinda way, The plot is interesting and surprisingly deep but due to it being unnecessarily stretched the plot doesn't feel as crucial as it should. The combat and general gameplay however do not deserve any praise. It feels like a total regression of what an RPG, any kind of RPG, should be.

But then again these are just my thoughts... at least I didn't give it 40% which almost happened after a particularly infuriating section.:p

Lol fair enough, at the risk of sounding like a fan boi myself I also think that sadly the FF franchise is slightly on the decline. It seems to me its all about the money with Square-Enix now, just churning out games that are mediocre and also trying to catch the western market with FF13, thereby ignoring its long time fans and hoping people will still love it because "its a final fantasy game" Suppose releasing FF13 on the 360 was a sign that they looking into a new demographic but if they are not careful they will lose the old fans as well as gain no new 1s.

FF VII still the best FF ever!!! :P

I think this game was made this way to attract more people. In that regard I think it possibly did, but it hurt longterm fans. Everything seemed to be streamlined, so much so that it felt lacking on so many levels. If one had to take the time and see what was changed, or better neglected, you would be shocked.

A sad fan here. But like Strife said, Square-Enix has been going downhill for some time now. Not just on their 3rd party games, but their in-house titles as well.

All I can say is: GIEF Persona 5 !!!

Pfffrt - Yuna & Tidus Spring Scene > All

I'm not finished yet with FF XIII , But I like it so far , nothing great , but enjoyable.

Lol, Rinoa and Squall ballroom scene > all :P

Also thats the thing "nothing great, but enjoyable" to me a FF should be GREAT, AWESOME and AMAZING...now its just meh ok :(
I think the old school FF players have become accustomed to a certain quality/way of life :P

Hmmm , The Ballroom scene was good , but at that stage you didn't yet have a proper feeling for the characters. In my opinion.

Man I am so disconnected that these emotional 'fuzzy' scenes do NOTHING for me. Gameplay, and the villains do it for me. FFXIII had no great villains.

Not to beat a very emo horse:
Sephiroth > All

I like my villains with very human elements.

I coudnt agree more, Sephiroth > all
Kefka from FF6 was also quite crazy but no1 was as hardcore and Sephiroth.

Btw did ne1 think the boss in FF9 was a bit queer wearing a bikini and all?

I've played ff6-13 (not 11 online).

FFIX was my least favourite, I think it was because the main char looked like an Olsen twin with a tail. I normally really like to get into the characters and story but I just couldnt with 9, as much as I wanted to and tried. At least it wasnt a totatlly linear game tho, still a fair bit of fun...just not my fav FF

Played half of V + VI.
Also did a far share of XII + X-2.
Then completed all of these including uber boss kills:
VII
VIII
XI
X
XI (Can't really complete a MMO, but I gave it a fair share of time - hundreds of hours).
XIII

Planning to get back to XII since I did not mind it, but I got distracted by some other game and never finished it. So far my favs are in this order, (not going to count the online game):
1. VII
2. IX
3. X
4. VIII

FFXIII is only exceeded by FFX-2 in how I feel about it - which is not good.

If you like JRPG's you should REALLY try Persona 3 and 4. Amazing games.

FF X-2 was a big win for me , not in terms of Final Fantasy , but just because I was so happy to get a "Follow up" on FFX , which is one of my all time favourites. And , I liked the Music in X-2 , infact , Music is one of the Big Plusses for me in ALL the FF games , I played them all , and loved it.

Haha loved this:
