Fist of Jesus

This might offend people but honestly its freedom of speech. Censorship is nonsense.

Like that game hatred its their right to make that game. like its these peoples right to make this game.

It looks like shit but its part of life. Lots of things will offend someone,I wonder how many people would be offended if it was buddha? or the Indian gods? or Muhammad? But no one is forcing anyone to buy it.

That's what I've been saying. I can see why this game exists and I will fight for its right to exist. The same as I will fight for those who are offended by it. Because they have that right too.

I think this an interesting one to throw into the 'are games art?' debate. Art is supposed to provoke emotion and discussion, and this certainly has done that. However, this seems a particularly tacky form of art.

It's quite a facile representation of a major religious figure and beyond slight comical value I don't think it carries much weight. Just about the only argument I can see this game has as a religious statement is to show that Jesus is not exempt from mockery, regardless of how Christians feel about that (and possibly highlight hypocrisy through their reactions).

After a bit of scratching about via Google, I haven't found anything from the devs regarding a socio-political-religious statement, so on the surface it appears this game is little more than an average 2.5D brawler riding on the comical coattails of having Jesus team up with Judas to fight zombies with a fish weapon. Yes, it seems they have done something controversial to generate interest and sales - humans have been known to do this, those conniving bastards.

On to the broader religious issue: yes, I'm sure if the game used Mohammed there would be death threats flying around. It can be assumed the devs did pick a softer target and pandered to their audience to make some money (I'm not sure what the latest Steam user stats are for atheists in Iran and UAE).

I suppose luckily for them the Christian church has gone through reformation since medieval times and isn't as bloodthirstily retributive as it once was. Islam as the younger religion has a bit of catching up to do, but these are social issues, and not game development and marketing ones.

If we keep winding the clock back, zealots of Roman, Greek, Egyptian, and Aztec gods would be equally outraged by a popular culture mockery of their deities, and no doubt with violent reprisals.

So, if history has taught us anything, it's that the Abrahamic religions and their god won't matter to anyone in a few thousand years as the human race marches inexorably forward with new bad ideologies, and will be relegated to the realm creative inspiration for the next PlayBoxStation 4K exclusive (available for telepathic download right now if you pre-purchased the Time-Machine Season Pass).

So in that regard, Fist of Jesus is prophetically ahead of its time, although somehow I doubt anyone will give a shit about it next year, let alone next millennia.

I mean, just look at it.

It's fun to make assumptions, isn't it? ;)

Fair enough, I guess I'm not going to get any concrete, logical reasons out of you other than "it's offensive because it's a mockery and it's a mockery because it's offensive." Let's just agree to disagree then. You have your right to be offended, after all. Just don't expect everyone to take it seriously.

Erm, how about no? If we were to censor things that some people might find offensive then MyGaming wouldn't have anything to cover. Oh, someone doesn't like the idea of hell and demons in videogames? Guess that rules out any coverage on Doom 4. Someone doesn't like the idea of violent crime in videogames? Oh well, bye bye Grand Theft Auto coverage.

Why are you so angry Zewp?

Im a Christian and I don't have an issue really with the depiction of hell and demons in videogames. I guess I cringe when I see blatant stab at my faith. At that point a smirk, close the browser and load a game that has some form of violence in it. People looking for attention only win when it is given to them, which gives them cause to carry on.

Would it be funny if this game was about Allah?

I don't think Christians would care if it was.... they would then also find it funny...

What I find funny, is that they are one and the same entity, yet both sides hate the other side :D

Really? What is the Christian equivalent today of ISIS or ISIL?

If it was about Allah the developers would have received death threats. I don't see any death threats here, or haven't seen any links to any.

There are games out there where you have to shoot Muslims... and TV shows showing how terrible they are. Christians have been just as bad in the past, killing people who do not believe in their god.

Regarding the single entity... if you look back further than the bible and look at the origin of the religion, you may find that the idea of Kryst-hla brought forth the modern religion of both Christianity and the Muslim faith.... The idea of Kryst-hla being divided into Christ and Allah. (This is one depiction of the actual unity of all higher spiritual beings)

Anyway, religion is a belief, so you cannot say I am right or wrong, whether I believe in God, or someone's pet rat.

TBlaar means that God, Allah and Jahweh are the same deity, and he is absolutely correct. Islam, Christianity and Judaism share the same history up to the point of Abraham, if I'm not mistaken.

Dammit, now I've replied to this thread and I really didn't want to get involved

The word Allah is the Islamic word for God, it means that they believe in all Gods... as in they believe in the one who deserves to be worshipped. that's all. They believe in the purest form of God, without mans ideology in the mix.

Yeah, wanted to stay out of this as well... too late now.

Religion goes back much further than our known history... why would anyone want to limit their religion / beliefs / spiritual understanding to the last ~0.000001 percent of earth's history?

I rate we stop replying. Our opinions have been made :)

Bull. Yes, Islam and Christianity/Judaism share the same history (Although they do differ quite a lot, but that's a different topic altogether) up until Abraham but the God of Christianity/Judaism had been around for a a fuckton longer before Abraham.

It's like a trainwreck. You just can't stay away, no matter how much you want to.

I vote this thread be locked. There's already another debate under Off-Topic about what offends people. The main debate has been moved there.

Just a quick suggestion - if you don't like a thread, close the tab and move along. Why continue to say that it should be locked and say dumb things like "this is now a PD thread"? There are people who want to have a discussion here and it would be nice to be able to do so without doomprophets chipping in every few seconds. If the thread does turn bad, there's a whole team of moderators in place to take care of it.

Just move on by. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read the thread. I promise. :)

I didn't ask for the thread to be closed, so you own the thread now? It has become exactly like a PD thread now, it's an observation, or do you just like to troll all my posts?

Oh, that's a relief. I can rest easy now.

Cheers

Don't worry, it's not just you. He likes to latch onto somebody.
