So much have already been said about ADSL, mobile broadband (3G & LTE) and the relatively new fibre to the home options, so I felt that maybe we need to look at what other alternative options are also available in SA. Fixed Wireless Internet consisting of a dish on the roof conected to a receiving tower close by, is the other alternative which is currently still mainly utilized commercialy but more and more people are signing up privately as well. This technology also provides a vialble counter option to Telkom LTE regarding price competitiveness and especially contention ratio, and most importantly quality service delivery as well as consistant up time speeds. So if you're area don't provide ports for ADSL lines than instead of 3G or LTE, Fixed Wireless Internet is the way to go. I'm currently with Sonic Wireless Internet and have an Uncapped/5mbs 24 mths package at R899pm. Uncapped means NO throttling or soft/hard capping and contention ratios at appr. 1:20 which results in mostly smooth streaming and no lagging with online gaming, subjected to the console been directly connected via cable to the router. Compare this to numerous issues on the overloades servers of Telkom and other ADSL ISP's and you have a real quality alternative to the current status quo.

Your argument is flawed in my opinion. YOu mark this wifi options as being a resolution to congested exchanges but yet these dishes all connect to a centralized location more ofthen than not linked to bonded ADSL lines. IT is a viable option for people out on farms that has high en Motorola wifi links of 10-40mb over a few KM to a major town but LTE at 899 from telkom in a city is not only a better option it will be faster and more reliable as the odds of a Telkom tower going down vs the tower of a small wisp is much smaller.
Uncapped has a FUP to any ISP . IF it doesnt its most likely a new ISP that has not yet had its lines crippled by down loaders.

Your info/understanding is also not exactly great. e.g. Pretty much nothing you can get in SA will get you the 1:20 contention you mention unless you buy a business product. The ISPs that mention the 20 are being dodge in that it applies to only one component of the infrastructure...and contention experienced is determined by the most contended part in the entire chain.
There is a reason all the gamers rather suffer on (sometimes) congested ADSL...

Telkom's LTE with all it's congestion is a no brainer. I've used both, you haven't, so I'm advocating top service form a private company compared to a semi government institution. Agree, we can debate on the 1:20, no one will ever know the exact figure. What I can tell you is this: being a former Telkom client and having friends whose utilizing ADSL and listening to their complaints of throttling, cogestion and hard/soft capping, my life has since being a joy since I WAS FORCED to go fixed wireless broadband due to a lack of ports in my area. There's no way u can compare Telkom with a quality private service provider unless ure biased or a salesman for Telkom, period!!!
Guys, I wish to add that I'm merely speaking from a satisfied customer's perspective and are in no way affiliated to any ISP in any shape or form in a professional capacity. Fixes Wireless Broadband Internet is currently still not as well known as ADSL, LTE, etc and thus the reason why I wanted to provide people with a quality alternative. I myself wasn't aware of this technology until I had to opt for a plan B when ADSL wasn't available in my area in Feb15 and LTE at the time was very expensive. If u require a honest, balanced and fair opinion on this option, I can safely say that you won't be sorry, it's that simple. Take note I haven't mentioned any specific ISP as there's many to choose from so I trust you'll see in that light. It's simply a nice option to have should everything else fail.

I am guessing you did not buy the dish and went out on contract. Hence the R899pm.
Anyways just a heads up, these solutions work, however with Government doing this Free wireless story, they are using the same equipment which caused serious packet loss on my Dish. It took sometime but they managed to change the Frequency on the high site and now packet loss is almost non existent. So if you start noticing packet loss, chat to your isp to find out if Government free wifi has come up in the area causing issues.
