Fixing Bulletstorm for PC

Hi guys,

First time I ran the game I noticed something was not right. It was running choppy and stuttered quite badly in some sections. Like any other UE game, there are fixes.

Basically, you are going to have to make 3 small changes in the games ini files for it to run properly.

For some reason, the ini files are encrypted, so first of all, download this program called inicrypt.exe.

For this program to work though, you will need .NET framework 4. So just download that too if you don't have it already.

For those of you that don't know how to get .NET framework 4, Google is your friend. Or click here.

------

Place the inicrypt.exe file in MyDocuments/Username/MyGames/Bulletstorm/StormGame/Config where all the ini files are.

To unencrypt an ini file, drag the file into the inicrypt.exe icon. Then just open with notepad and it should be unencrypted.

To see what to edit, follow this guide on the steam forums.

------

If you're too lazy to look for it in the guide, here is what you need to do:

Go into the StormEngine.ini and change "bUseBackgroundLevelStreaming=True" to False. This will cause it to stop streaming the game and just load it all at once, solving the choppiness/stutter.

Also, under the [TextureStreaming] section, change the PoolSize to a higher value. I have 1GB VRAM so I set mine to 420.

In the StormInput.ini file, change bEnableMouseSmoothing=true to false.

Those 3 changes made the game run perfect for me.

Good luck and have fun :D

Having to "fix" a brand new game. That is poor I am sorry.

More evidence that dev studios just don't give a dam about PC anymore.

Whats this new shit about us having to fix our freakin games? Release day bugs/minor patches I fully understand, but 'Oh yeah the graphics don't work' is pathetic.

I recall a certain other game where numerous quick fixes were provided and it started actually working after like 10 patches over 2 months.

But anyway, long day aside.........very nice helpful guide there Tooken.

lol, not a fix more of a tweak. huge difference...

...be curious to know the op's pc specs

Mine?

Phenom II 965 BE overclocked to 3.8Ghz
4GB DDR3
XFX Radeon HD 5850 BE

Yes, it's a tweak, but it pretty much fixes the brokenness of the game and makes it almost 100% playable :D

New shit? Nah dude, PC gamers have pretty much been doing this for most games post 2000. I almost always expect a game to be screwed on PC. Luckily there are lots of people out there that usually come up with some tweaks and fixes not too long after release.

However, this is a common problem with UE games, especially if they have been ported from console, and this game seems like it definitely was. Not nearly as bad as many others I've seen.

But yeah, just didn't want anyone that got it for PC to miss out before doing this because it really is a damn fun game.

to0kenZA, cool. thanks for the tweak, still i would wonder what the real implementation of the "streaming" is for. bah, ut was cool, you could config everything without going the file route.

Glad im getting this for Xbox , having to "tweak" something I just bought would suck. I'll stick to console.

Cool, no worries. Apparently, I read somewhere, that the consoles platform works best while constantly streaming the content instead of just loading everything at once. That's how the games are developed specifically for the console, but when the devs port the game, they don't bother to change a few basic settings that's critical to the game's performance on PC.

Yes, UT was friggin' awesome, one of the best shooters ever, imo. But I think the people are being lazy and not tweaking it themselves properly before releasing the game.

It's not all that bad. As I said, problem was fixed five minutes after I installed it. Some games have taken me whole nights and even the next day to get to an acceptable level of playability. Some games didn't even have fixes or patches. But overall, yes, it is a bit of a pain in the arse, but all we can do in that case is be very, very happy when developers like DICE announce that they are making their game with PC as the main platform.

All in all I'm happy to have bought this game and I'm enjoying it very much.

Thanks for the heads'-up. I have yet to lay hands on the game, but I've pointed out this thread to Tinman since he's reviewing it (lucky bugger).

While it's lamentable that PC gamers often have to dive into config files to tweak games for themselves, I still prefer being able to do that. It's great squeezing the best performance out of your kit.

Not everyone has top end machines, and not all PC gamers are competent enough with their machines to alter settings for themselves. Perhaps the devs had a good reason to use those settings; could it make the game play best for the average gamer on an average machine? There are also many different hardware combinations out there, and perhaps this is the most stable way to ship a game so that the average Joe doesn't run screaming back to the store when his game doesn't work. Just a thought.

I've had no issues, popped it in, installed, and played. Graphics look fantastic, encountered very few bugs. This game is insanely cool!

i'm confused here it runs out of the box fine for me too like tinaman, but i have like

core 2 quad
4 gig ram
260 maxxcore bfg

do you ever defrag your drivers ? i do once a month with mydefrag for my data disc and my os disc.
