Forgotten Gems

Was reading an article on FPS games and they mentioned "Blake Stone : Aliens of Gold" and I recall that it wasn't quite such a crappy title, but I can't remember why it wasn't more popular back in the day. We had Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Stone and Doom.

But it seems like Blake Stone's success was mainly squashed by the far superior Doom in all aspects.

Don't know how forgotten my gem was, but I remember playing Evil Genius and thinking:"Wow, what an amazing concept for a game". It was funny, witty and boat loads of fun to play. Sure, the gameplay got a bit grindy later in the game, but building my evil lair and managing my own evil empire was something really awesome to do.

DieGrootHammer I feel the same way about that game, Black and White... The idea of being a God and controlling your civilization and building it up, and the creatures, it was all a fantastic concept, that just lacked something...

As for forgotten Gems, round about the time of Warcraft 2 and Age of Empires and Command and Conquer, there was an AMAZING little strategy game called Dark Reign...

The game was ultimately dwarfed by the former mentioned titles, but it had so much potential...

I remember Dark Reign, it has some interesting gameplay mechanics for its time. Way better than some of the other titles, but it just never really caught on.

Dark Reign actually came out before StarCrap, it was likely just a bad time to release a RTS as it was wedged between Command and Conquer, Warcraft 2, StarCraft and Red Alert.

Ooh, the original C&C Red Alert march... used to turn up the speakers.

Hexen and Heretic, damn they had great atmosphere and feeling, would we great if they would release a new chapter in it. Would look epic on todays engines.

The very first game I ever played through from start to finish. A few times. ;)

I've just realised that the original Larry turns 30 next year. Shit, I'm old.

The thing that really put me off Evil Genius was that just as you started getting your base functioning properly, you were suddenly dumped on a whole new island and expected to start from scratch, while the enemy agents could keep sabotaging you. And it took forever to get your base back to where it was.

Indeed. I usually stopped playing at that point because it was just too much of a hassle. Plus your infamy would rise so quickly that getting money was a tiresome chore. Still, I loved playing it and I did finish the game a few times.

Was the first (and likely only) game that I figured out how to cheat without outside help...coz all the stats were on basically an excel spreadsheet... So I gave my yellow minions like 50k hp, coz agents were always RAPING them....innocent henchmen :(

Before Counterstrike there was Action Quake. Many lan games at the time like Quake and Half-life were all futuristic weapons like railguns and BFGs, whereas Action Quake had D. Eagles and Assault Rifles, which is actually more typical of competitive fps games today.

My matric comp sci project was a rewrite of a game called XQuest (1994) by Mark Mackey.

Elastomania (Action Super Cross) is another of my favourites from the late 90s, although it is no longer forgotten because he recently published an online version:

Another one worth mentioning is Liero. Imagine Worms in real time instead of turn based.

One of my favorite platformers where you even need to switch between slightly different realities to do certain jumps.
