Franchises that Defined Gaming

So which Franchises Define Gaming?
If I had to single out a few it would be , Half LIfe, Doom, Quake, StarCraft and World of Warcraft.
But there has to be a few Sports/Driving/RTS/FPS Franchises that make gaming what it is, not only a great way to waste some time, but in certain cases a dangerous obsession that revolves around dominating one's opponents :P

Gran Turismo for Playstation and Forza for xbox.

As i am a xbox fanboy, the game that stands out in the racing genre for me is definately Forza. Not many things can compare to a V8 Lumina with a supercharger and the howl it emits....Awesome.

unreal tournament ... mainly 2k4

this will always lead to awesome fun evens if the server aint that full ... reminds me of rick's most proud moment, and i qoute "i lost ... but i headshot neo83" bwaahahahahaha

I still have nightmares about you guys on the UT3 server, really, Boss with his @#$** ing hammer !

Don't forget Commander Keen for the platformer and of course Final Fantasy for turn based RPGs.

Halo Franchise By Bungie And Microsoft

Great games but not really Genre defining games IMO.Halo has high production values but their core gameplay is a lot like FPS games that were developed prior to it's release.Halo 3 might have stretched past the regular formula, but Halo Combat Evolved was very much a standard fps during it's release.

Yeah Sure Spartan, and the Halo Statue you have is because the game was nothing special, c'mon now really
Halo did define a generation in fact, the US blames it for the social downfall of a large portion of their gaming public and a very very large disruption in the PC/Console Gamer numbers

Final Fantasy was Genre Defining I agree, Survival Horror ? Resident Evil I think trumps Silent Hill for that title as it was first, the original Biohazard as it was named in Japan being one of the greatest gaming breakthroughs of our time

i guess world of warcraft should be worth mentioning for mmorpg i think considering all mmo games are being compared to it ...

I rate Medal Of Honor Started the FPS gaming world as im sure they were the 1st (even before Cod)
I remember jamming it on PS2 with my friends on a multitap was the best ever!

LOL, look MOH was fun sure but go look up Doom and Quake, as well as a little title called Return to Castle Wolfenstein, those titles truly started FPS as a mainstream genre

FPS:
Half-Life and Unreal Tournament for old-school style, and CoD for tactical shooters

RTS:
Starcraft, Age of Empires and C&C

Racing:
Need for Speed

RPG:
Diablo and Final Fanatasy

Action/Adventure
Prince of Persia

Stealth/Action
Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid

Platformer:
Metal Slug

Flight Sim:
MS Flight Simulator

Third Person Shooters:
GTA 3 and onward

Actually just wanted to post about how GTA basiclly built the sandbox gaming genre from nothing, legendary games and we are still seeing interesting applications of tech used, too bad I hate sandbox games I guess

For FLight SIms I might go with Combat Flight Simulator or a Jane's title, but Regular FS is probably just as good

Lol I was focusing a bit more on the consoles rather than the really old PC stuff. Because nowadays the real world war FPS's have taken over everything else :)

Yeah true, I remember playing MOH on the PSX when it was released, console gaming has grown so much though that these days its one in the same with pc's
One thing that I remember about even the earlier FPS titles, and specifically when comparing them to the titles I played once I got my First Xbox and that still holds true today is the fact that the Xbox Controller Layout is better suited to FPS titles, I think it has to do with the swapping around of the analog and keypad positions on the left hand side
