"Government said that it will subsidize 70% of the cost of the R 700 Digital TV set-top-boxes for the poor" WTF?!

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Telecoms/10167.html

and Eskom wants to give more Free Power to the Poor after stealing from us..

 one way or another we will eventually be among the poor and then we can get loads of free stuff from government...

Maybe once we are poor we can get free internet too...?!

out tax rands paying for other's viewing pleasure...

...lets hope the programs at least improves once this is all launched, no more re-runs of re-runs

It just means there will be a bunch of poor people selling brand new Digital TV set-top-boxes for half price :)

Also, I think the government just wants to maintain their propaganda--erm-er... I mean, their shareholder stake in the SABC and support the poor

Well, a 70% subsidy isn't exactly free lol :)

But I don't see the issue with it personally. Considering the government is forcing those who currently watch TV to use a decoder, it's understandable that they'd have to do something for those who can't afford the R700. It's easy for us to complain but we aren't the ones who are living on less than R50/day (so I hope o_O). I mean, the people in question would have to use half of their whole months' funds just to continue watching TV lol...

very good points raised by all... thank you for contributing...

here's another thought....

dont you think it would be better to rather invest any money they want to splash out on, in to getting something that can earn them more income in future (and no, LOL, not by selling the new tvs' / decoders) - Think about it for a moment...

if you were poor, like really poor, would you want to be able to watch TV or would you perhaps like to be able to get something that can earn you more money and contribute to your 'bottom-line'? or forget about that, what about some food or new material for a new tin roof......?

mmmm....maybe people should be watching less tv (specially sabc and the wrestling channel...uhm, i mean etv) and spend more time with their loved ones and friends

...my random thought for the day

I like to think of it this way...poor people are people, meaning they like to do things normal people do. Considering they're the ones that are in many cases waking up at the crack of dawn for long commutes and work like slaves, I think they're entitled to do something as simple as watching TV without it breaking the bank :)
