Galaxy S5 to be unveiled February 24th?

S4 is not a huge step up from the S3...

When the S4 launched Samsungs share prices actually dropped because the S4 wasnt as advanced as the S3 was compared to the S2... S5 needs something big...

Yeah the biggest jump was S2 ---> S3. But anything beyond that would be very difficult to justify

I dont think so, I think its completely justified to have a big step up from the previous model... we pay a fortune for these things, I want to know that im getting something more adequate than the previous model...

I personally do not believe when upgrading phones, to upgrade from current gen to next gen. In most cases theres not much of a difference and does not justify the cost. Every 2nd gen is more like it, but most of us are on 2year contracts anyway

The ideal is to wait until the phone has been out a year...its still pretty new, but the price has decreased nicely. To be 2 years behind though is too much. I did that when I had the S1, and my wife got the S3...the S1 was embarrassing in comparison, plus all the cool apps she could run didn't work for jack on my phone.

KitKat for lunch anyone?

Some more news via digitalspy:
Two high-end devices from the South Korean tech giant have shown up on benchmarking app AnTuTu under the codenames of SM-G900R4 and SM-G900H, SamMobile reports.

The SM-G900R4 is the more powerful of the two, sporting a quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800 CPU and 3GB RAM, sporting a 2560 x 1440 QHD display.

The SM-G900H is thought to be a more budget-friendly version of the Galaxy S5, with an octa-core Exynos chip clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB RAM and a full HD 1920 x 1080 screen on board.

Other specs match up across the two devices, which were both listed as featuring 2-megapixel and 16-megapixel cameras and the Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, although the more powerful handset offers 32GB of internal storage compared to the 16GB of the SM-G900H.

Samsung is widely expected to unveil at least one version of the Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress later this month.

Looking over at sammobile for more detail we get a bit more insight into how these two variants compare with the current Galaxy Note 3 devices (and leaving us that may be interested with a decision it seems - take the higher res device with a heavier draw on the hardware or settle for the 1080p version that will kick a bit more ass):
The device scored 31,843 points in the benchmark, the score itself is lower than of the Galaxy Note 3′s (SM-N9008). You may be thinking how is that even possible, shouldn’t the Galaxy S5 score higher points than the Note 3? Well, you’re right. The main reason behind the lower score is the Adreno 330 GPU. Even though both devices feature the same GPU, the Galaxy S5′s huge QHD (2560×1440) resolution puts a bit more stress on the GPU than the Galaxy Note 3′s Full HD (1920×1080) resolution, which results in a low 3D score.

The story is entirely different with the standard variant (SM-G900H) of the Galaxy S5. Benchmark reveals an Octa-core Samsung Exynos 5422 SoC with a clock speed of 1.5GHz, ARM Mali-T628 GPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, Full HD (1920×1080) resolution display, 16-megapixel main camera sensor, 2.1-megapixel front facing camera and this unit is also running Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
The standard variant of the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900H) scored a total of 35,445 points in the benchmark, beating the Exynos-equipped Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900) by 1,203 points and the premium model of the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900R4) by 3,602 points which is powered by a Snapdragon SoC.

Pretty interesting stuff... I wonder what the battery life difference will be on the two... Quite surprising that the "mini" out benched the big one, but makes sense looking at that display... This also leads me to believe the battery life will be significantly shorter...

thats why cell contracts are normally 2 years

I think they make it 2 years so they can have more of your money to be honest.

If it was 1 year, or less then yeah.. but then it means a higher monthly premium.

I'm gonna cancel my contract when it expires in dec, not going to upgrade as my S3 does everything I expect it to do. Battery lasts 24h with medium usage and never gave me any crap :)

Never use free minutes, as I do not call, I chat and have an afrihost wifi thingy with me for data.

Prepaid here I come! :D

I had to sell my iPhone 5s over December due to financial strain from a break-in, long story short, I bought an S2 for a grand. Give me longer battery life, and I see absolutely no need for another phone for a while. Once my contract is also finished, I will be cancelling. All I ever do is whatsapp, and browse. No calls whatsoever really. Well, nothing R50 airtime won't sort out :)

I love my apps and being in IT my phone rings all the time - I wouldn't mind having a dumbed down phone but as I said I love epic apps too much!

I'm happy with my iPhone and there are some brilliant resources and websites full of tips and tricks on how to optimize your phone and also power-user advice. Not saying that there isn't the same for android, but the amount of resources for iOS is fantastic.

I think with the iPhone 6 coming in with a larger screen, it will trump the S5 in terms of sales. A lot of people went Android over the whole screen issue. I think Apple will win this years smartphone race by a few meters.

I think it's more because of iOS lacks hundreds of functions compared to Android. I had an iphone 4s, only for 1 DAY and sold it(got it from that MTN deal where it went for R2k). As it lacked stuff I used on a day-to-day basis on my S3.

I can barely fit my phone in my pocket, so I really hope that huge phones aren't the way of the future. Small can also be good.

You really are the minority then dude. As much as Android trumps iOs in terms of apps, and features, 90% of the population do not need it, hence Apple being the brand that they are. Simplistic.

My Note 3 could fit into my pockets without an issue.

Unless you're a girl, most phones should easily fit in your pockets, even the Samsung notes are ok in that regard.
