Game design that screwed us over

Was there ever a time in your gaming "career" (for lack of a better word haha) that you enjoyed a certain game so much only to be disappointed by a game breaking bug/glitch/mechanic that totally put you off from playing ever again?

I have a few examples I'd like to share. In recent memory I decided to finish playing puppeteer on ps3 and on one of the stages my R2 trigger out of the blue simply doesn't want to work for a very important game progressive event. Never picked it up again.

Sid Meier's CIV 5, this game keeps on giving me a "renderer error" or crashes intermittently. I still enjoy playing this game though but only on dx9 and the lowest graphical settings.

There are a couple of games where I leveled up the wrong stats or perks in the Souls' games before reading guides online too.

Let's hear your stories!

That mechanic "Press X button" to smack opponent over the head or what ever else. I hate it so much I forget what its called. That screwed me over a few times.

Probably not even vaguely in the right line but a few years back I decided I want to play Dungeon Keeper 2 multiplayer with a few friends of mine "for old times sake".

We ended up spending about 6 hours trying to get it working.

Ended up in the making windows98 vm's on all our pc's and that was also terrible as no hardware acceleration.
Very frustrating.

Next day I dug an old P1 166 mmx out the garage and set that up on my table.

Finished DK2 in single player mode on that machine and never looked at it again.
2 computers on the desk, one was my normal machine, the other was purely for Dungeon keeper.

You know you can now grab them from GOG? Optimised and able to play on modern systems... Mostly through DOSBox wrappers. :p

lol, Not the only one.
I finished GOW all the way up to trying to kill Ares and then that crap started.
I have GOW 2 and 3 in the cupboard, waiting for the day that I want to sit and play Simon to finish GOW1.

No, not QTE's, Simon.

Very first game I played with a ps3 controller so was completely new to it, no muscle memory as to where buttons are etc.

Pretty sure once I am done with the last of us and go back to it I will be wondering why I found it so hard in the first place but still, QTE's are in my opinion nothing more than a game of simon.

O i get it! So you saying you when you fight a guy and his health got low then you had to pusg circle then triangle etc to do the "finishing" kill "whistling:

Exactly that. Same as those "cutscenes" that randomly go "press X not to die"...man its annoying. Guess thats why I prefer skill based games :)

If you played the God of War series then you will know all about QTE's

I don't mind them if they're part of a cinematic thats trying to involve the player, but as a gameplay element that means you die if you miss it, not a fan....

Yep, sat there for half a day with the guys health at zero not able to get the square circle circle thing just right  You can imagine how frustrating that can be. Felt like I must have killed him about 50 times over with all the effort but as I sucked at playing mini simon with a ps3 remote, all that happened was he had zero health, I had full health and every now and then I would fail at the simon game. :D
