Game dropped from Steam after Gabe death threat

There's a GIF for that
Indie game Paranautical Activity has been dropped from Steam after developer Mike Maulbeck threatened to kill Valve's Gabe Newell.

It seems Maulbeck (using the ill-chosen Halloween-themed name "Mike Murderbeck") was a little upset that Steam's promotional carousel referred to Paranautical Activity as being an Early Access title, shortly after it had been reclassified as a full release.

This was enough to set the developer on a Twitter rampage, labelling Steam "the most incompetent piece of f**king shit", claiming that the service is "f**king taking money out of my pocket" and "misinforming people that my game is in f**king early access".

The threat to Newell has since been deleted, but the sentiment remains:
"I hope by the time my next game comes out steam doesn't have this awful fucking monopoly anymore."

Unsurprisingly, the Paranautical Activity store page now redirects to the default Steampowered.com, and Maulbeck is no longer listed as a developer.

My personal feeling: that's what you get for having a hissy-fit.

He should've been criminally charged for the death threat.

Hehe I see the developer has got a history of bad behaviour towards Steam. He really got what he deserved.

People say a lot of hyperbolic stuff online that they don't really mean, but there haven't really been dire consequences until recent years.

I've lost count of the number of times someone has accused me of accepting bribes - or some other form of corruption - because they didn't like an article I wrote.

That said, the big difference here is that this guy spewed his hate as an indie dev on Steam and not some random anon demanding Half-Life 3 be made.

Have you ever been offered bribes, Jan? You don't need to go into details (obviously) but I've sometimes wondered to what extent a journalist with low integrity would be able to supplement their income.

I have been offered bribes, but pretty weaksauce ones, and not from people in the industry that actually know what they're doing and work with the media on a daily basis.

In my experience, people have a pretty low opinion of what a journalist's integrity is worth. If I sell out it'll have to be for an amount of money I can retire on "whistling:. How can you still work as a journalist afterward if no-one believes you?

That said, I've heard some pretty shocking stories, so maybe I should be a little more empathic to people's cynicism and general mistrust of journalists.

I dont understand how this dev tweeted those things, getting your game on steam is HUGE for distribution and just because it was marked as "Early Access" they go and say stuff like that. Surely Valve would have changed it if they just asked them constructively.

And you don't threaten the Mighty Gaben

He tweeted those things because he is a man-child that with no impulse control. He threw a tantrum and decided that everyone in the world should hear his whining. I have zero sympathy for adult-children that believe that there are no consequences for the things that they say, especially if those feelings are expressed on a public platform.

That being said, I do feel sorry for the livelihoods that he has probably ruined in the process. Kotaku said that he has resigned since this story first broke. I am guessing that he is doing so in order to preserve the relationship with the rest of the company with Steam.

I wish him the best of luck at the "shitty corporation" where he intends to be "an anonymous 1 of 1000".

It never ceases to amaze me how People don't think that digital actions have consequences, sure if you completely hide your identity you might be able to get away with what you do depending on the severity, but to brazenly make statements and threats no less with your real information on display without considering the repercussions is well....dumb...really, really dumb.
