Game of the Decade?

agree that WoW is a strong contender due to the impact it has had on the gaming community as a whole.

if i were to vote for game of the decade i'd have to sit back and think for a while ... though my first thought leads me to Batman AA; i just clocked it last week and it's so much fun and very atmospheric. can't remember enjoying a game as much as i did this one.

lol i nearly said starcraft but realised that came out in the ninetys O_O

Why are people looking at GOTD as game that made the most money, or game that had/has the most players

I'm wondering the same thing
And while not unexpected, I'm still amazed at how short sighted some people are, nominating recent good-but-not-great games (gears of war? Halo?? seriously???)
This is something that will take a lot of thought, and really shouldn't even be done now considering there's still a year to go in this decade.

This is the hardest thing to vote for.

Half-Life 2, GTAIII, MGS3, Shadow of the Colossus.....

Too many to mention, its been one hell of a decade for gaming

Just sneaks in being released on September 2000 but my game of the decade without any doudt is Baldur's Gate 2 shadows of amn.

I disagree. In fact, the only thing short sighted about this whole thing is to assume that there is any sort of conclusive, objective judgment of the quality of a game. To say that Halo 3 and GOW are not "great games" is silly, because it infers some sort of objective measure.

Our suggestions were based on some of the biggest games of the past ten years, based on critical acclaim and widespread reach, not personal preference, otherwise Anno 1404 would have made the list :D

And I think decade ends at the end of 2009, and 2010 is a new decade? Otherwise why is Gamasutra asking for votes now? I actually had this argument with a friend over the weekend, still not sure when the new decade actually begins...

Deus Ex Any other nominees are stupid

i voted for the same. brill game is brill
decade is up when it swiches over to 2011.
so having another year to vote is correct :D

it was the same as the 21st century debate.
21st century technically started on 2001 not the year 2000

Hmmm Diablo II came out in June 2000. So yeah it gets my vote for game of the decade.

I'm not really into these "Game of the X" things, since they're ultimately so subjective (what makes an RPG inherently better than an FPS, for example), but if someone shoved a gun in my face I'd proooooooobably go with Diablo II as well.

It depends on who you ask. For some decade is from 1-10 in which case it would be 2001-2010 . Others believe it start at 0 in which case its 2000-2009. I use the later.

But seriously? I liked to believe gamers are different, but a majority of them are brainwashed by publishers, and the fact that those game are predominantly console games, then and notice the lack of shooters on console? a few months ago I decide to try the famous resistance fall of man! WTF are they raving about? before that I decided to finish halo, even tho I hated it, I and It hardly has a story line!? and killzone, compared to the PC shooters we have had is pretty average you have got to admit (I havn't played GOW)
SO what I'm say just because a game made it big doesn't necessary means is good
(THIS IS NOT A CONSOLE VS PC ATTACK!)

Best game of anything, should be what you found to be the best game, not what sold the most or has the most players

I'll go with Diablo 2 as well if I had to pick. It's been the one game I've played since 2001 consistently, right up to this year. In fact if there was a similar poll for game developer of the decade I'll go with Blizzard as well :)

Regarding the beginning of a millennium/century/decade/year/month: It always starts with '1' due to calendar systems being created before humanity had a concept of 'zero', therefore the 1st year was 1 instead of 0, and if you were to add 2010 years to that you get 2011 (the beginning of the next decade, therefore 2010 is part of the current decade)

There was a similar argument when this century began, and people celebrated a year too early.

Thanks for clarifying that Tyger. And I would agree with Blizzard being developer of the decade. I thought Diablo II was pretty meh tbh.

I dunno about you ... but if someone shoved a gun in MY face I'd prooooooooobably go with whatever that someone chose. :D

That's still highly debatable, though. For one thing, the number zero predates the existence of traditional (i.e. months and years, not seasonal / festival type calendars) calendars altogether. For another, we generally use the Gregorian calendar, which itself uses Arabic numbering. Since the Arab number system used the number zero, I'm going to assume the Gregorian calendar has also always included a zero year (can anyone correct me on this?).

We use the decimal system ... 0 to 9. "10" isn't a decimal number unit. It's a combination of 1x(10 to the power of 1) + 0x(10 to the power of 0).

Binary (2) ranges from 0 to 1. Octal (8) from 0 to 7...and so on and so forth.

Currently the highest number unit we use in practical term is the letter F in Hexadecimal with the value of 15 in decimal. The number after F is a roll over from 15 to 16, being depicted as '10' (notice the two number unit placeholders?).

Besides - I don't know of any games in 2010 or 2011 that have been released yet. So 2000 to 2009 it is. Otherwise Tincan wrote this article a bit prematurely.

Anyway...semantics.
