Games in which Failure makes thing interesting

So this is a bit of a strange concept but it is something I experienced in a game called Sunless Sea.

Sunless Sea is a survival/exploration roleplaying video gamewith roguelike elements developed byFailbetter Games. The game was released on 6 February 2015 for Windows and OS X following a successful Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the project. The game takes place in the universe of Failbetter's browser adventure game Fallen London, in which Victorian era London has been moved beneath the earth's surface to the edge of the Unterzee, a vast underground ocean

The game makes it clear that you will die many times but will hopefully learn from the failures and do better the next time. I've been fortunate in that I haven't died yet but had a close run in last night where I nearly ran out of fuel - what was interesting was that this wasn't an immediate fail because the low fuel opened up some choices, some desperate measures you can take which in turn led to an interesting story where with a bit of luck and a whole lot of mystery our ship was saved and we lived to face another day.

What other games have you played where failure led to interesting twists or experiences rather than just a Game Over screen?

The quote in your OP is a bit messed up.

Anyway, the most interesting one I can think of right now is Dead Rising. If I recall correctly, every time you die you have to restart the story, but you get to keep all your upgrades, so after a while it becomes a lot easier. I may be miss-remembering it a bit, but it's something along those lines.

Sorry - was just a copy/paste from Wikipedia so the linked words caused issues. Fixed now

Deus Ex. On my second or third playthrough way back when I wasn't paying attention and I "died" in the brothers' apartment when they were coming to arrest him. Led to a slightly different story.

Not quite the same as Dark Souls or other games mentioned above, but still counts :P
