Gaming Addiction in a South African context

Hi everyone,

I am a Multimedia student at the University of Pretoria currently completing my Honours degree.

As part of a subject I am taking, HCI (Human Computer Interaction), I am conducting research on gaming addiction in a South African context. As far as I am aware, no study of this sort has ever been conducted with a focus on South African gamers. Although this is only a mini dissertation, I am hoping to gather as much data as possible.

Unfortunately I cannot offer much incentive, however as I am a avid gamer myself, I will provide a copy of the next Humble Indie Bundle (including the bonus games) to one person who partakes in this study( please remember to add your email address at the end of the study if you would like to get the Bundle).

I also encourage you to discuss gaming addiction in this thread if you feel the topic is of interest. Any stories, experiences or insights will help a great deal. Hopefully a few discussions and/or debates can develop.

The questions are based on a paper entitled Development and Validation of a Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents by Lemmens, J.S., Valkenburg, P.M., Peter, J.

nice interesting topic. submitted my feedback, felt like I was writing an essay but hey could spend all day talking about gaming and addictions.

Oh but the incentive should most definitely be more games ;)

I will try my best to publish/give access to the full paper. If not, I will just post my findings here.

I have some particular theories that I want to establish/determine with this study and as a gamer myself, suffice it to say, I am definitely not one of the people who thinks gaming as a hobby is a bad thing, I play more or less the same amount of time as most of the responses I received so far... Although I have to leave it there fore now, as do not want to influence the responses in any way.

When the next Humble Bundle comes along, I will draw the person at random from the email addresses provided.

I will also post the winner here.
