Gaming easter eggs

A virtual easter egg is a intentional hidden message, in-joke, or feature in a work such as a computer program, web page, video game, movie, crossword or book.

In older games, Easter eggs were seen as a necessity. Here are some examples of notable easter eggs:

Contra
Entering the "Konami code" backwards would cause the character to choke to death on nacho cheese bugles repeatedly.

Hitman Contracts
In the "Traditions of the trade" mission, a ghost can be seen and killed (twice).

World of Warcraft
There is a area called the "Ruins of Lordaeron". In the castle a throne room can be found. Disembodied voices can be heard. These ghosts have their own back story. Before there was WoW, there was just Warcraft. The ghosts come from the Warcraft games. If the player uses a certain spell, the ghosts can be seen.

Earthworm Jim
If a code is entered, a page full of pictures of programmer Nick Jones can be seen.

Doom 2
John Romero's head can be found on a stick in the game. It can be shot at.

GTA: San Andreas
1. On the bridge that connects Las Venturas and San Fierro. A message can be seen that says: "There are no Easter eggs up here. Go away".
2. The Hot Coffee mini game. This is a sex mini-game that was meant to be erased from the game, but somebody found it on the game's code and a mod to play Hot Coffee was created.

Diablo 2
A level filled with cows was rumored to be in Diablo 1. This turned out to be a lie, but Blizzard did include a secret cow level in Diablo 2.

What easter eggs do you remember hunting for days? Were there any that you searched to find for hours on end, only for your search to be unsuccessful? Discuss it in this thread

Here's something different for an easter egg. There was a racing game hidden in Excel 2000 (to be specific, it was more in the Office Web Components)

Here's what you need to do

  1. Open Excel 2000.
  2. Go to File, Save as Web Page.
  3. Then click Publish.
  4. Check the checkbox that says "Add Interactivity With".
  5. Click Publish.
  6. Close Excel.
  7. Open IE.
  8. Click File, Open, Browse.
  9. Go to where you saved it and click open.
  10. Now you should be looking at a spreadsheet.
  11. Go to all the way to row 2000.
  12. Click column A and drag all the way to column ZZ.
  13. Hit Tab and it should take you back to A.
  14. Hold Tab all the way to column WC. (Press shift Tab in case you move back).
  15. When you get there make sure WC is a white box and all the others are blue or green..
  16. Hold Ctrl+alt+shift and left click on the "four puzzle pieces" logo (The MS Excel Logo) on the upper left hand corner.
Controls:

  • Arrow keys: to steer and accelerate
  • Space bar: To fire at other cars
  • O: To drop oil slicks
  • H: To turn on/off your headlights (toggle switch).

If you try to enter the cheat code for Crusader: No Remorse, in Crusader: No Regret, you get teleported to a level with a lot of instances of the final boss, and a techno version of Jingle Bells playing in the background.
