Gaming improves your brain power - reality or hype?

I'd be surprised if it doesn't improve stuff like driving a car. Fast reactions, situational awareness etc.

Actually improving intelligence...doubt it.
 
I think a more important question would be how much more (or less) of an effect it has on cognitive development than, say, watching TV. Also, I wonder if there's any benefit of having gaming as a hobby for the elderly particularly in regards to holding off cognitive degradation associated with aging. I hope to think that I'll be less of an "old person" than typical "old people" who's hobbies are a bit less... mentally demanding.

I believe that video games can definitely improve reactions, concentration, and that playing certain games could increase your knowledge of certain things.
