Gaming linked to insomnia

really? i find i sleep a ton better after first slaughtering a few hundred folks in bad company 2

Well .. gaming is just one of many factors the study looked at - but it was mostly focused around the use of technology just before going to bed.

I actually read about it as well ... and I'm starting to think I should probably end off my evenings with a book or something.

I always try and finish off with a book - my brain doesn't seem to shut down easily after playing late in the evenings - but then I'm on the wrong side of 40 :(

That's my problem right there.

I play games till about 12:30 then go straight to bed, but once there My brain just doesn not switch off. Hence my sleep deprived state as of late cause its as if it is getting worse the older I get. I'm 28 now BTW.

Only when I have a new game:p

But I never play a game and go to sleep. Always watch a anime or a series then read a little then I am kaput:p

Yep, the only chance I get to play nowadays is after my wife and son go to bed, no other time really.

Well I'm 37 now and have suffered with insomnia since I was 13. Tried everything on earth to sort it out and nothing helped. Then I had kids... insomnia gone!

As for technology keeping one awake, I guess it depends on the individual. I think it's more about stimulating the brain before you go to bed than anything else.

When I read, I like to read non-fiction, so if I read before going to bed, I struggle to fall asleep because me brain is still working through what I've been reading. If I play any FPS before I go to bed, zzzzzzzz but if I play a RTS then I'm awake. TV also doesn't phase me before trying to sleep.

To any of you guys that struggle to fall asleep, try this: put on some classical music when you go to bed. Just background music but not too soft because then your brain "tries" to hear what's going on. Just at a nice relaxing volume. Works really well for me.

Bullsh*t!!!

I sleep like a baby after a couple of hours. Technically if you think about it gaming really sucks at your concentration, which in turn should wear you out for a better nights rest.
Personally I'll have to object to the rest of the false statements of the argument as well.
Why are people always trying to blame life's problem's on gaming? Aren't there more serious crimes out there to be investigated?

Happy for you....but each individual is different, not so?

Ummm ... dude. Take a chill pill. Seriously. Or - play less violent games ... I just bet they're the cause of your outburst.

Just kidding.

Anyways - read the post again. The heading is slightly misleading - since the study covered the use of most technology - including checking e-mails, hanging on Facebook, watching movies and TV.

And .. I'm not entirely sure that insomnia is a crime ... if it is ... I'm in a crapload of trouble already.

But ... playing of games ... I can understand them saying it could affect your sleep. Unless you're the type that plays until you collapse at your keyboard, there are several factors at play when you play games - that have, y'know, been proven, scientifically.

First off, if you're playing games that are full of action, that you really enjoy, that channels your aggression into something other than assaulting people with a bat - there are, unless you're some kind of mutant - certain chemical reactions that take place in your brain - such as the release of endorphins, adrenalin and such. Things that pretty much wake you up, and make it tricky to fall back asleep.

Chaos's comment about RTS's (sorry, your name is too long :p ) - also relates - unless you just zerg everything out of existence, your brain is all fired up and thinking strategy - and that activity doesn't just die the second you switch off your PC. You'll be replaying that game in your head for the next couple of hours. Probably dream about it too.

Maybe it doesn't happen to you ... as stated, everyone is a little different.

But nobody was blaming life's problems on gaming. Now ... go play something before you explode.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes I can't get to sleep without having a good gaming session, but other, I had such an awesome round of CoD I can't stop thinking about and can't fall asleep. Or I've got a great idea for my sci-fi story, and I have to do the prep work for it before I can get to bed.

Another leading sause of insomnia? Having a contract that needs to be done in 3 days!

I don't play so much in the day.i prob only play about 2H a day.the rest is usually working, browsing forum's,waiting for some random download to finish, watching anime, learning new SC2 Build orders, randomly looking at source codes of websites, recording people's voices on teamspeak then playing it back to them a few days later, working in blender 3d,mudbox,poser and a bunch of other 3d software, looking at all the boring stuff people people are doing, making fun of justin bieber on twitter, browsing online stores (window shopping lol),taking apart random old hardware in my room (trying to turn a chair into a PC) and rearranging my fishtank.

I'd say daily stress links to insomnia. Work deadlines, exams, etc etc and THAT leads to playing more games.

In real terms I can see how gaming may some how ever so slightly affect a persons speed of going to rest HOWEVER I think its marginal based on how stress and other life activities would affect our sleep patterns.

So... even though the article may state that it adversely affects sleep I would argue the point that gaming may bring a person to a more relaxed state after daily stress which actually in turn benefits your sleep pattern.
