Gaming shop

Hi Everyone,

I know one might say most games are going online, but not everyone has money for a pc, xbox, etc and the internet connection to support it.

So, we developing a gaming shop similar to zaps and just wanted an opinion on something. The question is this:

If you could have at least one thing in a gaming shop that would make you visit it, what would you most want to have?

I would like to see what everyone thinks before we venture too fatrdown the road when building something for gamers.

About me - I am an avid gamer and although I have gamed for many more years, I started with my first official pc in about 2004. I have/like FPS like battlefield series, Unreal series, COD series, etc. I am also a big racing game series and have most of the Colin Mcrae series and play a bit of the trackmania series. Love fine tuning my lap times, some times to an irritating point. Also, love sports game like cricket, soccer, rugby and similar just to chill. so, I have a vast gaming experience and would love to see how others comment on this.

Thanks guys (and girls if there are).

Ciao

Kilar, the coolest Feature I've seen in a gaming shop to date is a setup of some consoles and couches where guys can play games as well, allowing them to play a bit of MP while drawing some people to the shop (Like a Small 4 Player LAN Setup)
You could expand on that and possibly allow people to demo some games on Release days etc

Staff with an immense knowledge of enthusiast gear and honest opinions as to what would be better, not what would give the shop more money. Also seeing a wide(very wide) variety of hardware on shelf at adequate prices are quite thrilling.

Maybe test rigs that have playable games as Xero said, ranging from budget to hardcore overclocker's/enthusiast rigs so you can see the difference personally.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback. Its great to have good ideas. I like the console idea and the sales knowledge is a must.

If you have any other ideas dont be shy. honesty is the best medicine.

i have to say that prices are the most important thing for me. that and cool and friendly staff.

Open shop in an area with lots of "traffic". I have seen many gaming/internet cafes close down over the years, when they are situated in a lonely little centre somewhere (Cobble Walk, Durbanville area, has seen 2 shops in the same spot close over the last year or so...).

Specials
Facebook presence
Gaming / Lan events advertised all over
Competitive pricing
Friendly and knowledgeable staff

not what would give the shop more money. .

Mb12, I completely agree with you on this. One of my pet hates when I shop is being sold something thats not what I need. We will work on this.

Thanks for the feedback.

Tblaar, we actually going for a shop on a reasonably main road near a major golf estate. loads of regular traffic, lots of advertising.

But, the shop will be diffirent to what you might have seen. when its ready I will give you a post a few freebies to come check it out if you in the area.

Keep bringing the feedback guys. Any pet hates that you find - pc's too slow, consoles out of date, games missing? Waht else dont you like about present shops?

Cool, then all of the best to you! ;)

Let us know when it's running, and if in my area, I will check it out :)

Something that BT Games suffers from is shop size especially Cavendish and Canal Walk branches. When you are in there and there are more then 5 other people it gets really crowded so make sure there is enough space around the display stands of games so that people can move freely in the shop. Might be obvious but it seems to be overlooked by those branches.

I would also be keen to know if it is in my area. Main Road Cape Town near major Golf Estate, maybe Westlake?

Hire people who are not just looking for a job that pays the bills. Yeah, some of those might work out, but I'd rather hire people whose passion is gaming and hardware. Much like people who become doctors or lawyers, or accountants or pilots or whatever. You don't become a doctor because was an okay option at the time, you do it because you love being a doctor.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the advice. The shop is going to be in the JHB West Rand area. Thats all I can say for now.

But all the feedback is great. We want to build an experience, not a chicken run. We might not have all the games to start but with the online store we have with our in house partner we working on covering all the bases.

But, keep the suggestions coming. I'm all ears. Thanks so far for all the comments.

Hi Simon,

Clearwater mall is the same. If its get a few people in it gets too busy. But, I can imagine with the rentals they pay that it must be hard bring in the bucks. Plus with all the stock they have space is limited I bet.

I wonder if there is a market for steam backup files. Like ask a few rands for steam backup files for those who want to get it on steam but don't want to download 5+ gigs for games.

Great idea. We have a 497Gig Steam Common folder at work between the lot of us, on a share. Whoever gets a game first, puts it in this share and the rest can copy it from there after purchase.

The one thing that always seems to pop up is mice and how they feel in your hand. Its great seeing them but I think having models of the mouses that people can actualy test out before they buy a new mouse. Maybe charge like R10more then for the mouse and soon it should make up for the demo mouse. Just something to think about.
