Garry's Mod "error" helps flush out pirates

and for today's feel good story :)

Earlier today message board posts from players of the popular sandbox game Garry's Mod started popping up. The users said they were unable to play the game, stating that an error message told them that the game was "unable to shade polygon normals." It also put up a number at the end of the error message.

As it turned out, that was no ordinary error message. Garry's Mod creator Garry Newman put the error message in the game to find out who was pirating the title. And that number at the end? It's the user's Steam ID number. As Newman wrote on his Twitter page, "Having fun watching people complain." Those who saw the error and posted it up for all to see found that their access to the game was banned

:cool::cool:

Note how few responses there have been on that site. hahaha! Piraters too scared to post anything now! HAHAHAHA!

Hahaha EPIC :D!!
Now why can a small time guy like this catch pirates so effectively when his big time counter parts like EA and Ubi have to use DRM?
Good on you mate!!

oh i like how this oke thinks :D

"It's the simplest stupidest DRM possible, a phone home," Newman said on his blog. "It is not uncrackable. You could crack it with notepad. Or by disconnecting from the internet." The point isn't to make impenetrable DRM, he said. "Making it uncrackable isn't the motive here – laughing at [pirates] is."

It amazes me how people;e expect support when pirating a game, FFS if you going to pirate something at least have the decency not shove it in the dev's face...
