Homeworld Acquisition and Plans

Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition.

Brian intends as first priority to direct Gearbox's interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today's leading digital platforms.

Please visit the Gearbox Software Forums to share with us and Brian what you think should be done with Homeworld moving forward. And, please try to get our attention if you have capability and interest to join the effort in developing or enabling Homeworld's future.

Good news. Gearbox generally does a pretty good job, so its good if that pick up an IP which could have died a slow death & faded into oblivion.

Wonder who they're going to outsource development to or from which other project they're going to siphon money to fund this one.

But there were other buyers. There was a successful Kickstarter raising funds for this auction.

Kickstarter is great - I've backed projects myself, but I do not feel these initiatives have sufficient power to run a project like homeworld...not yet anyway. Homeworld kicked ass from a tech pov even if ppl could not see it...

matching that is a tall order - kickstarter or otherwise.

Oh, wait... I was confusing this with Homefront... So are they going to convert Homeworld to a FPS now? Haven't seen anything from them that are not FPS.

Did anyone hear about the controversy of the XCOM FPS videos on youtube all being taken down. I guess the FPS remake of XCOM couldn't have worked after XCOM: Enemy Unknown was so successful.

Why would it not work because Xcom: EU was successful?

I remember that, but I think the FPS fell apart before the strategy game even came to light. At one point they changed the whole thing to a squad-based third-person shooter.

At least it didn't get the EA treatment and gave us syndicate...
