Gender wage gap in game industry

Part of what persuaded me to post this is the free entry for woman cosplayers from the "comic con sa" news story.

As if there weren’t enough #reasonswhy, recent figures published by Game Developer Magazine have shown that women in the games industry are routinely paid significantly less than men. As spotted by The Border House blog, the numbers show that men are on average paid around 25% more than women for equivalent jobs.


With the exception of programmers, where the ludicrously tiny 4% of positions filled by women show a very slight higher payment than men (less than 5%, and explained as The Border House points out likely by their being paid to retain them), the figures are terrible.

Of artists and animators, the average salary for men is $77,791. For women, $60,238. Because, er, women don’t draw as well? Making up 16% of all positions, women are paid 22% less. Then designers. Male employees average $76.6k, whereas female employees bring in $62k. 11%, making 19% less. For producers, men make an average 8.3% more. In audio, men are making an enormous 65% more. SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT. Even in QA, the 93% of male employees earn 25% more than female. And lastly, there’s business and legal, where the 18% of women are making 24% less than men, seeing their average number at around $82k, compared to men’s at $108k.

There will be factors, certainly. The hugely larger numbers of men in the industry means by nature there will be many more of them who have worked for longer, and thus secured ultimately higher salaries. But there are women who have been involved for a long time too, and this absolutely doesn’t explain away these massive discrepancies.

It’s despicable, and the only valid response is for those in senior positions at publishers and developers to not pretend it isn’t them, to look at their own figures, and to rectify discrepancies.

While I very much agree that the Salary gap is an issue and we need to sort it out there are just a few things scrolling in the back of my mind

1. Men often pay to enter a club while women don't
2. Men pay for dinner on a date
3. Men pay higher car and life insurance premiums
4. When was the last time a girl walked up to you in a bar and offered to buy you a beer
5. ( This one thanks to my sister last night) Ladies Night 2 for 1 cocktails
6. TV size

It's not women's fault that all that happens. What's bad is when women encourage this type of behaviour which unfortunately happens far too often.

I know I'm being idealistic but it's something that makes me rage every time I think about it. It results in a Pseudo-Equality.
 
It's like we should encourage the sexist habits that raise women (being a gentleman, paying for dinner, opening doors, chair thing etc) but at the same time remove other issues in the name of equality.

It just seems like a socially respectable version of sexism.
Like black businessman groups are a socially respectable form of racism.

P.S. I'm not trying to be insensitive here against women

I agree, I actually had a discussion with a friend of mine regarding this exact thing.

These gender issues are, IMO, a result of an indoctrination that occurs at a very basic level of life, childhood.
At the very core of things, we are human, man and woman is what we are anatomically/sexually/physically, but thanks to society, social roles have been assigned to sex/gender, which is the root cause of the gender gap IMO. We grow up everyday being told a "man is the head of the family", "a gentleman is something a man should aspire to be", "girls play with x while boys play with y", "women have more emotional range than men" (excuse the lack of better examples), and whatever other social mantra assigned through gender/sex, and regardless of how good or bad these roles are (e.g. Being a gentleman vs. getting paid more for being a man), they draw a line that shouldn't be there between men and women. Society also tends to shun or look down on those breaking out of these assigned roles.

You also get surveys from all sorts of studies that act as proof for our mental, emotional, intellectual differences (I'm still doubtful of a lot of them).

This gender gap is a symptom and it'll be hard to remedy unless we alleviate the root cause, the social indoctrination.

I believe we are humans with different personalities, skill sets, IQ's, intellects, emotional ranges, and other differences but these differences are not a result of us being man or woman. The sooner society grasps that, the sooner we'll eradicate gender discrimination (and by extension, any other form of discrimination).

I disagree completely with this. We should encourage these acts regardless of gender.

I'm trying to say that instead of encouraging men to be nice to women, pay for their bill, opening doors and all that nonsense, we should encourage people regardless of gender to be nice to each other.

Thank you, totally agree. I'm a bit old school with these sort of things and find it totally acceptable to open the door for a lady etc. I don't believe it is sexist at all.

What has holding a door open got to do with sexism? Its a matter of attitude and culture I think. I've noticed that a lot of black guys like to dash through the door first and Chinese guys. I'm not sure if they are scared that they will appear weak if they let a woman go through first?

1. Dont club, so dont care.
2. We both agree to pay.
3. Men in general are higher risks
4. My current girlfriend gave me her number first.
