Generals 2 goes Free to Play

I lost interest with the C&C series after 4 was announced and the changes they made, why they had to mess with a timeless old classic like they did who knows.

Honestly only problem cnc generals 1 had was the lan networking sucked. We once played 4vs4 and 10min it lagged out on gigabit lan. Ftp means no lanning so no improvement i assume. That means likely wont be playing.

Honestly I am a little disappointed by this move. I wanted to get the boxed version of this game like the good old days and with no single player its exactly what I didn't want. I don't like playing multiplayer strategy games. BOOO!

Yes you can, especially since Free-2-play isn't free, at least most of the time. Even then it doesn't really matter what the price is if they aren't giving you what you wanted in the first place.

Its your choice to pay for it. If you don't pay for it, then its free.
Like league of legends.

-Yeah, sure EA is screwing the series and we're not getting what we want, but there is not much we can do unless we team up with other forums and do like a world wide boycott, spam EA inboxes. etc. to force them to change. "whistling: :p

League of Legends is part of a minority of F2P games that actually do it right. This is EA. They're not likely to do it right, seeing as move to F2P in the gaming world generally means the company isn't making enough money with its current business model and wants to make more.

Ever heard the term F2P, Pay2win?

Ever heard the term F2P, Pay2win?

Yes, sure. But some of their f2p aren't that bad. Like battlefield heroes.
I'm just curious how they will monetize an RTS game. People aren't going to buy vanity items for their tanks, pay2win will unbalance the game. Most likely they will make a avatar, exp boost and world conquest to make money and that's not really gaming breaking.

Lots of free to play games have content locked away for use only by paying customers and even those that don't like LoL or Tribes, you are still forced to invest a lot of time in the game in order to get at the stuff you really want. So at the end of the day it's still not free unless your time is of no value.

Or they can do what Age of Empires Online did and make you pay to unlock premium races which gives you access to premium equipment or units. AoEO is extremely unbalanced if you don't buy a premium civ.

Or they can make you pay if you want to go into better pools for multiplayer matchmaking, or want access to certain maps.

There's a lot they can do with a F2P strategy title.

Once again, we're talking about EA, a company whose only motivation for making games is making as much money as possible.

All companies' obligation is to make as much money they can for their shareholders.

You're missing what I'm saying though. EA isn't in the gaming industry because they're passionate about gaming. In fact, they couldn't give a shit about gaming, and if ruining a popular and well-loved franchise brings them money, they don't care.

EA is run by businessmen, not gamers. While that might be good from a business perspective, it's shitty when you start alienating your fans because of it.

Well not all companies are publicly traded. :) Valve and Epic afaik are such companies and when the people who own the business actually give a crap about what they make it's not all about the money.

Yeah, but it just shows what a reputation certain companies build up. If someone told me Valve would be making HL3 F2P, I'd be a lot more curious and generally positive about it. The moment EA announced that Generals 2 would be F2P, I sighed inwardly.

Ea made battlefield 3 premium to make cash........... so i expect to have to spend money on cnc even tho they say ftp. Likely its just gonna become impossible for me to play aswell since i dont have method of paying for games online.

You make a good point, its all those publicly traded companies that makes crap. Acitvision and ubisoft is spamming AC and COD. But when you got millions of shareholders screaming for your blood you have to do something. And in the case of publicly traded companies you have to balance out risks and creativity with shareholder's demands; have you seen EA stock performance? its horrendous, no faith in EA at all in the current tough gaming market. EA has to do something to boost its credibility etc.

If all EA shareholders were hardcore gamers would EA be different?

Also there must be some bioware managers and top honchos at Bioware victory looking over the CnC game, they wouldn't want it to ruin the "bioware" image.

EA owns Bioware, so they are milking the name for all its worth, just like the "Bioware" developed SWTOR, which is actually Bioware Austin, a totally different developer in a different city, hell even different country, with only a few original Bioware guys there overseeing things, even those guys have gone back to Canada.

So yeah EA are pretty much going to attach Bioware to every studio they can.
