Geohot asks for donations to help fight Sony

Like I said before, no matter how noble his original intentions may have been it lead to the wave of piracy and MP hacking that is sweeping the PS3. For every guy who simply HAD to have Linux on his PS3 there are 5 others who just wanted free games. Period, no ifs no buts, the end.

Yes you have to right to do what ever you want with the PS3 you legally bough and now own as long as that doesn't involve copyright infringement, which is the main reason this thing is so popular. How many uber geeks are there who want linux on their ps3?

This is going to be one hell of a dragged out case.. Eish. I must say I kinda feel sorry for the oke, but maybe he should have though about it a bit more before he did it. It's a shame and a waste of talent because clearly this guy is a very bright youngster.

I still say this guy did nothing illegal. Sure, he might have created and enabled everyone to be able to pirate now, but you can't blame him for other peoples' actions.

Someone invented the gun to hunt for food, but then some oke decides to use it to kill someone. Somebody invented the internet for whatever is use was and now is used primarily for porn.

You can't really compare creating software to circumvent hardware security to the invention of the gun (which was invented for killing other people). If you work on a construction site and you fail to secure a I-beam on the 32nd floor which then falls and kills 3 co-workers you are responsible. His actions allowed people to steal games, whether it was directly or indirectly that is irrelevant.

If sony actually lost this case it could do the industry more harm that good since it will give the parasites a foot hold to further self justify their parasitic ways. I hope he looses. If I was him i'd cut a deal with sony and take one for the industry.

Edit: You may use the internet primarily for Porn but I dont think that is what most people use it for, primarily.

Why not? Many people have made/invented/modified something in life and someone else took that same something and gippoed/altered it for a illegal purpose. Now, is the inventor guilty as well every time? No.

This guy, bought, paid for his PS3. What he does with it afterwards is, well his business. If he wanted throw it off a building, that's his right. He chose to crack the security instead. Just because others can now use that to pirate games isn't his fault. That was not his intention. You say it was though. Well, prove it.

Everyone is getting their panties in such a bunch over this, it's quite funny actually. Like I asked on some other thread, why is this? The PC and Xbox have been cracked since the beginning, yet that doesn't seem to stop anyone playing/using those platforms.

I think Sony must just be grateful that it took as long as it did for their console to be cracked. They had a good run of no piracy, but it was bound to happen eventually. I would rather have given this kid a job and got him to work on the security for the PS4.

PS As for internet usage, I have no idea, I was just speculating, but it would be interesting to see figures of data for internet usage. I suppose P2P would actually make up a LARGE portion of the pie.

You might as well say that the guy that invented electricity is to blame for piracy because he invented the thing that powers these devices. Also, the guy who invented telephones is also guilty of crime because people have used a phone as an accessory to a crime too many times now. :D

If he had cracked it and used it with only his own PS3 there would have been no problem but he distributed it openly across the net which was practically inviting people to use it for piracy. And for him to say "I just wanted the peeps to be able to run homebrew" is naive.

Of course its his fault, he gave them the tools to do it with. If he hadn't they wouldn't have been able to do it. So he is responsible, no he's begging the public for funds to fight "the man", its pathetic. And it wont work, legit buyers like me wont support him and the people who are behind him, the parasites, want everything for free so why would they pay money to help this guy? He likes free stuff, he should go to legal air, the free legal help agency.

no all he did was tell the world that if every on the 32nd floor move there chairs in the same direction the i-beam will collapse.

Consider this - it's like working out the security key code to a private building, then publishing that code all over the internet and saying, "Lol, have fun". The very act of publishing that code was reckless and foolish, and entirely lacking in any sense of responsibility.

His subsequent arrogance hasn't done much for his case, either. Hacking the console was an impressive accomplishment; being a dickface about it isn't.

This guy, bought, paid for his PS3. What he does with it afterwards is, well his business. If he wanted throw it off a building, that's his right. He chose to crack the security instead. Again, the intention is irrelevant. This issue here is consequences. And it's not at all unreasonable to expect that publishing a console's security keys online is going to have unpleasant results.

If he wanted to be taken seriously, he should have contacted Sony instead of publishing the key online. Instead, it's more like 'I HACKED UR CONSOLE LOL AND SHOWED EVERYBODY ELSE HOW TO DO IT LOL I CAN HAZ JOB PLZ?'

I can't believe the nerve of this guy. You can paint it whichever way you want, this guy has done more harm to Sony's platform than the minimal of good for the 5 people who want to run Linux on their PS3's. He deserves no support.

Wow you guys are really passionate about sony and the linching* of this guy, personally I don't have an opinion on this matter as I am an Xbox gamer when it comes to consoles but sheez take it easy. C-4 Sandwich, I mean really, Tank you need to find a store that would serve you "Chill Pills" in a drip...

so by your reasoning, it's fine to pirate on the ps3 but not the 360 or pc?

double standards much?
