An asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier will fly between the earth and the moon and may be visible over the Philippines on Nov. 9.

We are all gonna dieeee!!!! No not really, close call though, it might also be visible with the naked eye.

Interesting stuff

The asteroid, called YU55, is one of the biggest known, according to Renato de Leon of the Astronomy Department of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geological and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

He stressed YU55 will only be visible in clear skies. Unlike a comet, YU55 does not have a tail and will appear only like a slow moving star.

Was hoping for something a little more exciting "whistling:

But can you land a spaceship on it? :)

Wow, that is actually close, there's a lot of weird shizz going on nowadays.

Ready tinfoil hats!

So I guess we survived?

Geese, yesterday I didn't even want to think about it. A rock the size of an aircraft carrier, oh my that's going to cause a big splash.

I actually forgot about it yesterday even though I posted in this thread :D

Someone should put a mock up game of real live and you unlock the acievments as stuff don't happen...

And I must say 4 football pitches long is a bit diffrent from 1 aircraft carrier.

Sigh spelling mistake.

Well, it's big enough to cause havoc lets put it that way.

The world could do with a apocalypse, might improve it.
I think you could be on to something here. All the frivolous things people fuss about on a daily basis come to a sudden halt, people start scrambling for survival.

I wonder what people would be like generally if something like this were to happen. Would we see looting and murder left right and center or would humans actually juxtapose for the better?

We would all go into "Kill or Be Killed" Mode.

I was thinking if something this size was to hit and by some miracle hit say... somewhere around the equatorial zone in Africa it really wouldn't have such a huge impact on the rest of the planet (Sure we might get some messed up weather) but think of the hundreds of millions, possibly billions, of dollars charities pump into african aid, we would suddenly have a bit of capital with which to build the space elevator. Where as if it hit in say Asia or Europe or America the world would be fucked due to economic collapse.

Haha just finished watching a Armageddon rerun on DSTV.

Was thinking along those lines too. Under most impact scenarios there isn't really anything humanity can do about it. Plus the sky isn't monitored well enough to give enough advance warning. So despite all our progress as a species everything is still riding on the cross-fingers-&-hope-for-the-best strategy. Kinda puts things into perspective.

Psychology isn't exactly my specialty. I can tell you though that stock prices would go down and heroin prices would go up. ;)

I was thinking if something this size was to hit [...] wouldn't have such a huge impact on the rest of the planet
That is mostly true. Size is only one factor though. Firstly there is no atmosphere so there is no terminal velocity. The only real limitation is the speed of light. Secondly some of them are solid metal (most aren't). In short: If its fast enough & hard enough then:
