Golf GTI driver arrested for driving 225km

The driver of a white Volkswagen Golf GTI has been arrested for driving 225km per hour in a 120km zone on the N1 in Midrand, Johannesburg metro police said on Wednesday.

"He will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court with seven others arrested at the same place [on Tuesday]," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

Another man was arrested on the N1 south near the 14th Avenue offramp in Roodepoort for driving at 172 km per hour, also on Tuesday.

well they hitting people hard. Good to see something getting done 225 on the N1 is a bit ruff.

hmmm its really sad IMO that the cops can catch these guys with standard performance cars yet they cant catch the one with illegal modifications that do the same speed in a 60 zone
 
172km on a motorcycle isn't that hectic, I've even done that. in fact, I dont know anyone with a decent bike who hasn't been up to 180km/h minimum come to think of it.

But I agree, 225 is a bit hectic. Especially on the N1 where there is always lots of traffic. Well, pretty much anywhere in GP really.

225kph on a public road is pretty dumb, period. We all know the quality of our roads, after all.

The harder they hit people speeding the better. One day it will be you or me (and you family or friends) in a car on the road when one of these maniacs comes ripping past loses control and takes me out in the process. I have no sympathy for their consequences. It should be way more than a fine. Jail time and/or community service and suspension of drivers license for a minimum of 6 months.

A lethal combination. And combine that with a lack of maturity and you have a recipe for disaster.
 
225 is definitely solidly in no excuses territory. I still think taxpayer rands would be better spent keeping the rustbuckets driven by monkeys off our roads.

Guys in high performance cars driving wild speeds - yeah its dodgy but I feel a lot safer near a high performance car @230 than with a taxi @ 120. At least I can rely on the high performance car to have something resembling brakes and ABS. Chances of an actual drivers license being involved is also much improved.

Agreed. I feel its important to note that some people drive the exact same stretch each and every day which does help w/ potholes. Won't save you @225 but its a start.

Yeah, not really sure I agree with this. At those speeds, a rust-bucket has more chance of avoiding a crash than the high-performance car simply because of the speeds involved. Also, sure, you may drive the same road every day, but bumps that aren't even noticeable at 120kph suddenly result in big moments at 200kph+... Just takes hitting one of those, and not knowing what to do, and bye-bye you and whatever is around you.

I would agree with the part about feeling safer at speed in a high performance car, but not at 230. At 180 sure, but anything over 200 becomes a major gamble.

Have you ever seen a taxi crash happen? I think you greatly overestimate the ability of *some* rust buckets to stop at all.

Last one I saw I had time to switch lanes & slow down ~30kmh before the driver of the taxi even started to brake.

Down hill, completely overloaded, insufficient following distance, tyres that looked a bit dodge & judging by the reaction times fast asleep. Cruised straight into the lorry (thankfully traffic was moving at 80ish, not 120). Slightly different conditions & they would have needed 14 body bags.

Not convinced you read my post 100%. I said near them not in them. i.e. I feel less endangered by a car approaching at 230 in the rear view mirror than a taxi @ 120. With the 230 car...worst case scenario is you get out of the way or maybe piss him off by not getting out of the way. Baring a complete brake failure/drunk driver/blind as a bat it should be fine. Taxi...see story above.

All of this is of course dependent on road conditions. Car weaving through crawling traffic @230 could get interesting too....
 
While I agree that 225 is excessive speed I still maintain that a taxi at 100Kph is a lot more dangerous than a performance car at 200. Cars mad to travel at 200 across Germany's freeways are also designed to stop at those speeds. This is why SA needs better access to Racetracks, give drivers the chance to take those cars to full speed in safe environment and also to find both their and the car's limits so they know what's safe and what isn't. There are just so many factors that come into play, even when your driving at 100 that speed isn't always the deciding factor.

I could tell you story of the guy who brought in tires so worn you could see the wire frame in the tire. Then there was the guys who was short on cash and wanted to buy his brake disks this month and then brake pads next month (bad idea since your brakes won't work effectively). Both those cars shouldn't be on the road nevermind travelling 120 on the N1 but our police would rather sit on the side of the road with speed cameras vs pulling cars and checking if a car is roadworthy. Then our government only focuses on speed as dangerous with vehicles so people neglect all the other aspects on their car and say "well I'm not speeding so I'm safe" whilst driving with tyres with zero tread.

When I come to power I will close off certain roads at night and allow kids to race and get the speed bug out their system that way, not on open roads with traffic. Then every car that checks in will have a roadworthy inspection before competing, unroadworthy cars will be fined and will have to report to a police station in 2 weeks for a follow up. Same thing over the holidays, vehicle inspection officers at every petrol station on the N3 checking cars whilst drivers take a break.

I just think going at 225km/h is waaaaaaay worse than 172km/h on a motorcycle. 172km/h on a bike is almost not even news worthy imo, its bad yeah, but pretty common.

From pov, I have seen bikers come off at those speeds and end up doing months in ICU while their loved ones wait for a miracle. Head injuries and brain damage are common and leaves the biker dependent on family for the rest of their lives.

I lost two good mates (also brothers they were) to biking accidents. And they weren't doing excessive speeds. So if 172 km/h isn't newsworthy, I get the feeling it's acceptable practice? Good forbid we ever reach a stage where we condone excessive speeds.
