I'd recommend RoseZA. http://www.roseza.co.za It's completely free, no ads as it's sponsored by Mweb, it's completely local so super low pings <100ms which is really nice. Also, the client is only 700MB in size, so you can DL it easily or if players live in your area they can burn you a copy on a disc and mail it to you. Their forums are really helpful like that :)

Totally off topic and I apologise for that but... Ever notice the grammatical error in your sig? It's silly but... "dont" needs an apostrophe :o :p Otherwise I support it completely :D

I have noticed that, but it's only one little mistake and everyone's human. When it makes the sentence incomprehensible then I tend to want to correct it. Besides, it's in a .gif and I don't have fancy photo editing software to correct it :)

i recommend RIFT, ow wait that's not out yet :D

if you are going the wow route get someone to help you out with the client - it's monthly sub + purchase of game and expansions

guildwars are fun too, it's just purchase of the game with expansions

nothing wrong with RoseZA it's a south african emulation of the free 2 play int client.

there is also eve, but it might be the end of you ;)

:edit
i would also suggest dungeons and dragons online, it's imho the better of the lot for international free to play. there is also of course lord of the rings online :)

few i would not recommend for initial start up is
eve,
age of conan,
darkfall,
mortal online,
and fallen earth.

Hahahah ... EVE. If you try starting with that you will probably never want to touch an MMO again :D

I actually want to give RoseZA a go for something a little different.

RoseZA is filled with awesome people, from their Dev/GM (admins) and Thriel (Big Boss :p)
Whilst I was playing there was still developments going on (not to sure if its still carrying on)
If you have queries, loads of in game help. If you can't get help there they have their own channel on mIRC.
Seriously loads of fun but there were a few things that got me:
So my cons:
They hosted by MWEB (I'm with Telkom) so the peering issue would make it seem like an Int game to me.
At the time I was playing there was huge imbalances amongst the classes (but in their defense they continually did updates to try fix that)
I couldn't get past the kiddie look of the characters
Pro:
Always adding new content to keep the game up to date and fresh
Loads of things to work for (armor/weps/vehicles/clan lvls/pvp gear)
Awesome community

Guild Wars was my first MMO and still love it to this day.
My opinion, the true experience if your looking between GW and Rose would be Guild Wars as a main game to focus on and then Rose as mer fun of things. Wouldn't recommend doing both at once though, as interface of the two are different and can take time adjusting

I'm also with Telkom and have experienced minimal lags. You might want to try both servers, they have local and intl. now and they recently released a patch which provided much balancing to the classes.

I guess I am a bit late to the party (been seriously preoccupied), but WoW gets my vote.

This is largely due to it being very noob friendly, and that it caters to a lot of different playstyles. However, I would like to point out the terrible community at large, but that can be worked around depending.

Guild Wars is also a good start, but I always find myself on the fence regarding whether or not it is a "real" MMO, but please, let's not get into that.

I have hated, loved, loathed, and adored WoW, but somehow I always seem to go back to it. Cataclysm has also spruced up the game a good deal, making the "old" content much more enjoyable.

At the end of it all find a game with a large community (means more opportunities for interesting things to happen), and a game that has a varied amount of content, such as PvE / PvP content.

Have fun! Usually your first MMO is your best... sigh...
