Google's new instant messaging app will compete with WhatsApp

This might actually work.. Given that Google owns android it might come as standard with a new release of android..

First Talk, then Wave, then Hangouts... When will Google accept they're not a social networking company? Isn't it enough to own almost everyone's details via Gmail and search history?

They need to ascertain what makes a good IM.

Find out what makes users use and keep coming back to IMs that are used favourably, then with that research create a competitive IM.

People are so negative about Google's new products. I din't think it should be just dismissed right off the bat like that. Yes, it would take something truly spectacular to dethrone the likes of Whatsapp or Facebook Messenger, but some of the tech that is powering this app does sound amazing, albeit quite scary as well.

So, apparently Google will use machine learning algorithms to learn the type of responses you send, and predict what you want to say to certain people. They're calling it Smart Reply, and it's pretty cool but petrifying to think about. Just think, Google will try and mimic your responses, enabling you to "talk" to someone else without actually saying anything. It's pretty Skynet shit right there. But cool nevertheless.

They should bring back "google talk" \ gtalk and make it compatible with this so you have a desktop version.

Google Talk was rebranded to Hangouts, and still have all the same functionality, except I think they locked out external XMPP clients.
