GPU upgrade question

Hello guys, just a quick question for those who know.

I'm planning on getting a Radeon 6990 soon and I was just wondering if it would be worth it.

At the moment I have an AMD Phenom II 965BE that's overclocked to 3.8Ghz. I have an XFX Radeon 5850 BE currently.

What I would like to know is, would it make a big difference in performance if I get the 6990, with my current CPU? Would my CPU bottleneck the card too much?

Thanks in advance

Nee, want dis AMD

:p

:p

Ek het net issues met my 6870 gehad van voor tot agter, sal nooit weer ATi / AMD gaan nie.

Maplassie hoe nie van ATi/AMD nie

Maplassie says AMD stands for "Ag my Doner!"

:D

on a serious note, i think the CPU wud possibly bottleneck

I have a phenom X3 first gen at 2.4 Ghz and a Gts 250, the card is great but can do better with a better CPU, hence me hpoing for the X6 for my bday

I say do it anyway, atleast later u can upgrade ur CPU if need be, the card will but the current Gen so i say go 4 it!

Dude why don't you consider getting a GTX 580 or even a 590. I'm a amd fan, but at the moment I think nvidia is the better option.
AMD's got too much issues with the current games.

I don't have any issues with my 5850. In fact, it's awesome! But it's just doesn't have enough juice, or so I fear for BF3. I don't think I'll be going for the new Nvidia cards.

I'm also scared my CPU would bottleneck, but it's a relatively new CPU. But I don't want to make a definition without getting a definite answer, though.

If you're preparing for BF3 then I would suggest a CPU upgrade rather than a GPU at this point. I went from a Dual Core to an i7, keeping the same GPU (GTX 285) and the difference is amazing. Of course now I need to upgrade my GPU but Crysis 2, Homefront, BC2 and all the rest run beautifully on my machine as is.

That was the answer I was fearing :(

There's nothing wrong with your current cpu, it's more than sufficient for the new games ill rather go for a gpu upgrade!

I still think that rather than spending money now, wait and see how the game performs with what you have. And from there you can deduce what needs upgrading.

I just checked some benchmarks and I see that the 965 BE is actually on par with the i7 965.

This link is only for Bioshock, but the Crysis Warhead benchies are pretty much the same.

Yeah Rif, I will only be getting the card closer to the end of the year, when the prices may have come down a bit. Taking it slow. But even if I get the card by that time, I will upgrade my CPU if need be, which I don't think will be the case though.

Ja, I'd rather go CPU upgrade. Will mean more in the long run. As long as that card is DX11 to appreciate BF3 in all its splendor, upgrade yr CPU. And I'd recommend going Core i7 2600k with a lekker Asus board if budget allows. Those CPUs are really breathtaking. I can kick my ass. I upgraded to the i7 870 in last quarter last year and now these bad boys come out at the same price. I mean, on anandtech benchmarks it beats the Core i7 980 on quite a few benchmarks and when you consider the price difference, it kinda makes sense.

What's the pricing on these bad boys hey?

Rambo if the money is burning ur ass then buy the GPU :D

I personally would do the same with that setup, often the CPU is overlooked because of the importance of the GPU these days.

personally im upgrading the CPU before i get another card, its kinda like upgrading only one aspect of your car, ie makign it faster but neglecting the suspension and breaks, in your case the speed is great and the breaks/suspension is great too, its quite a difficult choice, whats more beneficial in this situation? probably the card..others will argue the CPU, CPU to me sounds like just as good a option as a new GPU.

Lets say for arguements sake, what will you upgrade to? Phenom II X4? X6? IMO go for the X6, else go for the GPU, a jump from to cores to four is good, but a jump from 2 to 6 will make an impact.

At the end of the day what do you really need? better graphics or better proccessing power?

I would get the GPU purley to see the impact and improovement it has, if its not major, then you know its time for the CPU to move on out. So in conclusion:

Take a chance, buy the card and hope to see a major improovement, if not get a new CPU too(you have time)

Or get a CPU, see the improovement you gain, if not major then..ding ding ding, a new GPU is require( again you have time)

i say go for the GPU, most of your improovement should be there...

+1 seeing that he's already got n quad core cpu, I thino he'll benefit more from a gpu upgrade.

The 2600k is retailing for approx R2500 - R3000.

Computersonly OCed one to over 5Ghz apparently and was stable on air cooling alone! Personally I think that is pushing it a bit. They now have it running at 4.8 or something.

I already have the Phenom II X4. I bought it about middle last year :(

So far it's served me very well. I'm sorry, but when it comes to cost/performance ratio, AMD just is the only logical option. I'm also thinking of going for the GPU first. If I have to upgrade my CPU thereafter, well, then I guess that if you have to, you have to. :/ Hoooly crap that's gunna cost a lot of money! Guess I won't be thinking of quitting my day job anytime soon :p

Oh and Rambo...

whilts ur thinking about all this upgrading, make sure u mentally prepare yourself for flying awesomness in BF3 :D

PS i shall only bail out when you shout "bail out!"

so as logn as the upgrade improoves/maintains ur flying, im all good for whatever :P
