graphics card help

Hey guys. My first thread here so take it ease on me ;) About a month ago my friends were over and we were about to play some fifa when suddenly the pc turned off. I tried reviving it but the light would turn on for a split second and the fan would spin literally once and then dead again. I started taking it apart piece by piece and I realised that when I removed my graphics card it would turn on. Although I can't see what's going on because the only port to connect my sceen to the pc was on the graphics card. Here are my specs:
Amd 8 core bulldozer
Ex graphics card: amd xfx 6950 hd
8GB ram
3:5 TB (2 hdds) hard drive.
Windows 8 pro (original)
Aaaaaand what else??

Anyways the thing is the replacement of my fried gpu is so expensive! (Around R3000)
On my current rig I could play the latest games like battlefield 4 etc with excetional smoothness on high-ultra. What would be the best replacement my current gpu or any other one u may have in mind. Thanks

A Radeon R9 270X would be a good replacement, performance will even be a bit better. If you want something that'll last you a lot longer as games up their VRAM requirements, overspending a tiny bit for a R9 280X is well worth it.

Before replacing the GPU, I'd try to test it in another machine first and identify if it was the GPU or PSU that caused the fault.

Agreed on the R9 280X. Have one in my current MiniMonster and it's an absolute beast. For that money, you won't get that much power or longevity.

Dude thanks so much for the reply. I dunno why but I didn't get any notification of the reply even though I did subscribe to it. Anywho I will test it nd report back. Also what do you think about a second hand graphics card? Also when I search, there is a sappire, asus, xfx, and a whole range of products under the R9 270X. Which one to buy?

Have you maybe tested your GPU in a friend's pc to be sure its dead? cos you dont mention that...

If it still works then it could be your PSU with too little juice?
