Graphics card keeps on overheating

You can see in sig what my specs are. When it gets a bit out here in pta (which often happens), my pc crashes a lot. If I switch on the manual fan control on ati catalyst control centre to 100%, it works perfectly, but then my PC sounds like a freaking jet!!! Keep in mind I keep my side panel of for a little better airflow, but to no avail!

Is there any other way to rectify this?

1) Remove any dust from the heatsink and fan
2) Ensure there is "breathing room" ie, move the cables out the way
3) Consider an aftermarket cooler?

Rather strange that it's overheating considering you have a HAF X

My Gfx card hits around 78 degrees centigrade. Fan usually on around 50%

I know, that's specifically why I got the Haf X, for better cooling!

1) Cleaned entire case last week
2) All the cables are tucked away neatly, Haf x's got that secret cabling compartments HAHA
3) I am considering getting an after market cooler, is it a common thing for a HD5850 to run hot or is it just mine?
Idling it runs at 50 degrees celcius, set fan on automatic but then it only runs at 22% (which is a bit odd!)

maybe it's time to get something proper like a nvidia ?

ok just kidding, i know there was some fan issues which was fixed by driver/bios.

You know I'm really starting to think about it... I've got a nice gtx470 in mind! :-)

If your sure its the GFX card overheating, get warranty. Chances are the cooler wasn't seated properly at the factory. The 5000 range of cards run very cool under load.

That's not right, It's freaking hot here in Cape Town and my 5770 is idling at 46C with fan speed at 40%. At load it maxes at 55 -56C. I know it's not the same spec, but the 5 series Radeon are known for running very cool.

This. I'm running 2 X 5870s virtually on top of each other in my case, and under load they never hit more than 75C at about 45% fan speed.

It's definitely the gpu, when I turn up the fan speed to 100%, pc doesn't crash at all, but when I turn it back to 50% pc crashes after about 2min of black ops play.

Do you think it's a factory fault?

Sounds like a factory fault. It happens, you just happened to get unlucky. Send it back on warranty, they should replace it on the spot if they have stock.

EDIT: You could re-seat the cooler and re-apply thermal paste yourself but this voids your warranty, so its just better to send it back in case something else is busted.

So this is the first time that I will have to send something back, do I just take it back and tell them it's overheating? Bought it from PC international

My HD6870 reaches 79-83C when playing Crysis (DX10,64bit, Very High). And my CPU never goes above 43C (Phenom X6 1055T). But even at these temps, the Auto Fan speed never goes above 45%. And there are no crashes. But maybe this generation just uses more power. But seeing all the rest of you guys with Mid 60C degree temps is a little concerning.
