Grim Dawn

Running with a conjurer currently but thinking of rolling an alt. It's fun watching your pets destroy everything in sight but gets boring after a while.

I started with Nightblade and so far I've only dumped points in the dual-wield line and two points in the passive effect that slows enemies and reduces their offense. My damage output is ungodly. I came across a random level 21 boss in a cave and I utterly decimated him at level 15.

I'll decide what to choose for my second profession after I max out the dual-wield line.

Focusing on a few skills is definitely the way to go, otherwise you will end up with a bunch of skills that are basically useless later on. With my lvl 54 Shaman my base dps is at 6K now and with the skill I use it goes up to about 11K.

First time I tried the game I went with a NB. It felt incredibly OP and almost made me think the game was a bit too easy on normal.

Basically the same as TQ. Focus on one or two skill lines else you end up with a subpar character.

There is a normal difficulty? I thought that was the "casual/I don't want to die ever" setting. [emoji14]

Veteran is where it's at. So much more fun when champions can one shot you. Health potions become a necessity where on normal I barely ever used potions.

Anyone have a basic build for witchblade? I am on lv24 onehand plus shield real tanky but it doesn't feel like I do any real damage and this is on normal [emoji851]

What two classes is a witchblade a hybrid of? I have never had one, so I am not sure. Regardless of that, what does your skill point distribution look like? Are you focusing on a few skills and dumping most of your points into them? It will also help if you focus on one kind of damage and try to get gear that supports that, e.g if you're a Shaman you're most likely going to want to focus almost exclusively on your lightning damage modifier and look for gear that boosts that. My level 54 has a lightning modifier of +370 % as well as high electrocution modifier and I only use a select few skills that I have maxed (some are even overleveled) and make use of said modifiers.

My biggest problem at the moment is staying alive. I can do a tonne of damage with or without my melee weapon, but I die in a few seconds, I've got to be very quick on the health potion button and that doesn't really help much to be honest. I am playing on elite difficulty though, so it could be that, but the chances are good I need better gear.

EDIT: Another thing I forgot about, are you using devotion? That can make a big difference to your damage output as well.

Here is what my current skill point distribution looks like:

And here is my base dps:

And when modified by the skill I have on left click (Savagery):

Soldier and occulist, I am focusing on about 3 skills rest I get from my weapons and devotion I built turtle and eel or snail so mostly defence

Aah ok. I think chaos/vitality damage could make a nice build with those two classes. Sigil of Consumption is also one of my favourite Occultist skills. Can't see anything wrong with how you've used skill points or devotion. You will start dealing more damage as you get better gear, go look at the type of damage the skills you use do and try to get gear that supports that is my best advice.

I updated my previous post with pics of my build, if you're interested.

Was planning to go play Destiny now, but talking about Grim Dawn makes me wanna play it so bad now. :p

What build you rolling with, if I may ask?

I'm learning to play atm, going Soldier. At first glance, it looked complicated, but they have really made it easy to understand. So, learning as I go. Like the game atmosphere background sound.

Stupid question, when the next patch drops, taking it to a finished game, it means it'll just be like a normal patch for example, bug fixes, balance issues, etc, you'll still be able to go on with your saved game?

I am really enjoying the game atm, went out for dinner for sister-in-laws bday and caught be off guard that I was thinking about the game, putting some time into it now, dont want to just start from scratch. I'll do that with another build. Currently going with a Soldier and Shaman, feels like nice match...lvl 11 atm, so early days.

Also, have to add, due to the summer heat, I had set most settings to high to avoid my hardware from overheating, just set everything to the highest setting....damn the game looks awesome!

Yeah, the game is content complete so you won't lose anything. Everything is already there but they want to do one last build with bugfixes, balancing and final polish before it comes out of early access.

So about that last boss...

Can somebody say OP! :wtf: After beating that #%!*?@% I decided to start a new character this time going for a Trickster. A Trickster is a combination of the Nightblade and Shaman classes; for my build I decided to focus on Dual Blades so I could ultimately go for Execution, Savagery for bleeding damage, and maxing out Night's Chill to reduce enemy cold resist.

This worked out pretty well until the OPness made me get comfortable and I ended up callously dying to some insignificant Act 2 boss.

One thing I must say if you have not yet faced the final boss is to make sure you have high chaos resist. Even if you have it maxed out to 80% on normal, drink a pot as well to take it up to 90%. I had 0% which resulted in a terribly underwhelming first encounter where I basically just threw bodies at the boss until it died. :(
Haha, yeah even after you warned me about the boss I thought I could take him easily, everything else wasn't that hard to kill, why would he be? Lesson learned. I lost count of how many times I died trying to kill him, but I managed it in the end at least. Busy grinding to lvl 60 now before I continue with elite and this time I'm making sure to collect gear with chaos resistance so I'm (somewhat) prepared for that bastard.

Dammit you guys make me want this game. I flippen loved TQ.
But I already have too many games to play.

If you loved TQ you have to have this. IMO it is an improvement on TQ in every possible way. I never finished TQ since I am not the biggest fan of Greek Mythology, but I absolutely love Grim Dawn's setting and atmosphere and have played through most of the content multiple times (only finished it once, so far). Definitely the best ARPG money can buy.

Loving Sigil of consumption I am a bad ass [emoji51] literally watching mobs melt away just standing there giving them a slice with my bastard sword once in a while

Grim Misadventure #88: A Look Back at 2015

Here is the latest Grim Misadventure which goes over just how much things have changed in Grim Dawn over the last year alone!

Zantai said:
Hello and welcome to Grim Misadventures 2016! It is an exciting year, the year Grim Dawn will leave Early Access behind and mature to full-release. That time is almost upon us as February is fast approaching. We are busily chipping away at polish and bug fixing tasks that will help Grim Dawn shine at release.

2015 was a very good year from Grim Dawn. The game saw many critical additions and improvements that had a dramatic impact on the product as a whole. Many of these changes occurred thanks to the feedback we have received on the forum. In many ways, you, the players, have helped shape the direction of the game.

Let’s take a look at just how much was introduced into Grim Dawn back in 2015, across 7 Builds and 17 Hotfixes.

From the Past…

  • Act 3 Chapters 2 and 3 - With the game continuing to grow beyond our own expectations, we released the completed Act 3, the largest section of the game world thus far with as many quests as the first two Acts combined. You faced off against the abominations crafted by the Aetherials, a ravenous swarm of Dermapterans and then engaged the Cult of Ch’thon as they gathered blood for a ritual intended to bring about the end times.
  • The Faction System was implemented, allowing you to gain favor with the survivors of Cairn, and to become a hated foe of your enemies. Friendly factions offered you several quests that delved deeper into the history of Cairn as well as unique equipment and Augments. Hostile factions began spawning the ruthless Nemesis Bosses. The Bounty System offered you over 130 short tasks to earn reputation and rewards.
  • Nemesis Bosses were added to the spawn pool, creating chaotic and unpredictable situations fraught with danger, but also exceptional rewards. In total, 6 Nemesis Bosses were added.

  • Shaman Mastery - Grim Dawn’s sixth mastery, the lightning-infused wild Shaman, brought the possible mastery combinations total to 15. The Shaman filled an interesting niche, combining two-handed weapon combat, pets, powerful lightning techniques and savage vitality and bleed damage. The Shaman was originally planned as an Expansion feature, but we managed to fit it into the original release.

  • Damage Per Second display was overhauled so that you could accurately determine your damage output with any skill, not just basic auto attacks. A new Damage Per Hit section was added so that you could quickly compare how your gear was affecting your abilities. Finally, the skill tooltips themselves were redone so that they update with your equipment and buff bonuses.
  • Treasure Troves were added as a means to hunt for fun and reliable sources of Iron Bits. Who knew that blowing up chests was a smart thing to do?
  • Updated Loot System dramatically cut down the number of duplicate unique items you would get from chests.
  • The Devotion System added another complex layer to character creation in Grim Dawn. Devotion Shrines were scattered across the world so that you could unlock powerful Celestial Powers that are attached to your Mastery and Equipment skills.

  • Act 4 was released. The already larger than promised world became even larger with the release of Act 4. You fought your way to the Black Legion stronghold at Fort Ikon, then faced off against the Cult of Ch’thon at the Necropolis as they sought to bring forth the Loghorrean, the Voice of Ch’thon.

  • Performance Optimization - many improvements were made to the game’s code in order to squeeze out smoother framerates for everyone, particularly for those with older CPUs. Many players saw huge jumps in performance where previously they struggled to get even a steady 30 frames per second.
  • Empowered Epics - Old favorites were brought back as we took all of the low level Epic items and remade them as new high level versions for you to hunt down, with updated stat values, new stats and even new skills.
  • Legendary Items - Over 240 Legendary items were introduced into the loot pool to be hunted down. Legendaries represented the pinnacle of loot, with nearly every Legendary in the game offering a special power.
  • The Second Rogue-like Dungeon, Bastion of Chaos was added with the release of Act 4, allowing you to delve into the deepest reaches of the Chthonic Void and face off against its most cruel denizens.

  • Item Stacking was updated with new controls so that you could split and combine stacks with ease. With this change, crafting materials could also stack to 1000.
  • Components were overhauled. With the removal of Completion Bonuses, we were able to make Components stack and many Components were buffed. In addition, this allowed us to make Crafting work automatically from your Inventory, Personal Stash and Transfer Stash.
  • Completed Quest Log was added by popular demand, allowing you to track what quest you have or have not done on a character.
  • Many Environments were updated with new assets to bring the world of Cairn to life. The caves became overgrown with vines and mushrooms. Villages gave you a haunting view into the past as you explored run-down businesses and shops. The swamp of Wightmire became overgrown with new trees and plants.

What’s next?
We may be reaching the end of the line, but that does not mean we are going to stop improving the game. We still have a few surprises in store for the release itself, but you can look forward to something even sooner than that. We have been busily chipping away at various balance issues and bugs in order to prepare Build 29 Hotfix 4. However this update’s changelog has now grown so big that it has earned the status of a Build.

The update will bring many changes to the existing balance of Masteries, including the complete overhaul of certain skills. We took a look at the balance on Elite and Ultimate and made some adjustments to the overall damage and Offensive and Defensive ability values. You can also look forward to tweaks to Devotion and Legendary items, including the addition of two new Legendary sets and one new weapon. Finally, the Loghorrean encounter has received a tuning pass that should put him more in line with the difficulty you would expect on Normal and Veteran. There's more, but it's really best to save it for the Changelog, which is coming sooner than you think.

You can look forward to Build 30 later this week, with the full release still expected in February.

w00t w00t for build 30 later this week! :D One thing I noticed recently after starting a new play-through was how much more detailed the underground environments were; they're far more lush and overgrown with vegetation now. Even the god rays you see at night are truly stunning!
