Grim Dawn

I want to get back to this game, but feel daunted by the classes, I have no idea who or what to play anymore

Just experiment with the different classes until you find something that fits your playstyle the most? Even though I usually prefer melee builds in ARPG's I didn't enjoy the soldier as much in GD. My highest level character at the moment is a pure Shaman, not something similar to what I usually like, but I've grown to really enjoy this class.

It can be a bit overwhelming with the 6 classes and all the skills, with devotion system and multi-classing on top of that still, but they only way to find something that you enjoy is to experiment. One thing I have learned that works well for me is to pick only a handful of skills you like and put all your skill points in them so you end up with a few maxed skills as opposed to a lot of underpowered skills.

Yea that is just it, so many choices, it freaks me out every time.

Which class do you play mostly in Diablo III? Maybe I can try to recommend something in GD thats suits a similar playstyle.

Im a wizard/ Demon hunter - so ranged dps is my happy spot - I always play a magic user in all games

Haha, that's just the opposite of what I play in all games. :p

Hmmm, closest thing to the D3 wizard would probably be the arcanist in GD (pure or combined with another class). I haven't played past like level 11 with it so I can't really suggest some good skills, but there are some great build videos on youtube that can help you out in that regard:

The nightblade is probably the closest to D3 demon hunter, but it's a melee based character and not ranged DPS at all. While not similar to the demon hunter in terms of the skills and what not, you can try out the demolitionist for ranged dps. It has a lot of decent ranged skills as well as a great fire shield for when enemies get too close to you. You can also eventually dual wield one handed guns or go with a two handed gun instead (or both).

I've tried all the classes but so far my favourite has to be the Arcanist. I've dual classed with soldier to create a Battlemage but I mainly put points in the soldier mastery bar and passives which give me extra physique, health and health regen, and resistances. Otherwise I am a pure elemental damage dealing Arcanist with maxed out Mirror of Ereoctes to tank mobs which surround me.

I've gone max replicating missile with supercharge to stun creeps and keep them locked in place so that Elemental Storm can do its thing. My offhand also has a chance to proc Elemental Seal which is another elemental AOE spell which compliments Elemental Storm beautifully!

I actually rolled hardcore with this build and I haven't even come close to dying yet. For the final boss encounter (Loghorrean) I didn't even have to use a health potion because of how much damage I could deal and how much damage I could tank. Granted I have only finished normal so far with this build but even on elite I'm not having much of a challenge yet.

One thing I have noticed is that Grim Dawn is extremely unforgiving to glass canon builds, but if you balance damage with resistances you will become unstoppable. Another reason I didn't need to use a health pot when dealing with the Log is because when I faced it I had maxed out elemental, vitality, chaos and poison resist. How much is maxed out? 80%, but when you start elite you lose 25% of it, yet I had focused so much on maxing out my resistances that when I started elite I lost 4% at best from some of my resistances! :D

Thanks I will give the arcanist a go :D

Finally picked this game up and played a few hours yesterday, really enjoying it so far.

I haven't played a good ARPG since I got burnt out on Path of Exile, and Grim Dawn's gameplay reminds me of how much fun Diablo II used to be :)

Is anybody having trouble with multiplayer in Grim Dawn?

Been having internet desync problems and can't seem to host a game on LAN reliably :/ Despite this, Grim Dawn has taken up way too much of my time lately xD

have not yet tried MP, but had to just add that i'm LOVING GD! rocking a Shaman/Occultist (Conjurer). Also tried out a few other classes, but my Shaman seems to kickass. Only thing i'm not happy about is that my Hellhound seems way too weak.

Shaman really is an awesome class!

I finally completed Steps of Torment Normal using my Demolitionist/Occultist with some help from my mate who plays Shaman/Nightblade.

We wouldn't have made it without his lifesteal and health auras :)

I'm trying out a Warder build. Just wish i could get to endgame instead of starting over with new build ideas.

Has anyone tried a pure build yet? I'm thinking of trying a soldier s&b build but worried about endgame viability.

my understanding is that you can choose a secondary class and not dump any points into it. or dump some points for a while and then respec. Have not seen any negative to choosing a second class, other than the fact that you are then locked into that second class
