The studio behind the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of first-person shooters is no more, according to online reports.Ukraianian news site UkraNews reports [Russian language] reports that the owner of Ukranian developer GSC Game World, Sergei Grigorovich has decided to shutter the studio, promising to pay employee wages through February 2012. Studio director Dmitri Bourkovski seemingly reinforced the report via a recent tweet [Russian language], which translates to, "Not PR. GSC closed."The studio's closure also means the end of development for GSC Game World's upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, the fourth release in the cult PC shooter series.Gamasutra has contacted GSC Game World for comment, but has yet to hear back as of press time.GSC Game World was originally founded in 1995, and before releasing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl in 2007, the company developed PC titles such as Cossacks: European Wars, American Conquest, and Alexander. In 2006, a group of GSC veterans left the company to found 4A Games, the studio behind the 2010 post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2033.

This broke my heart, this means no S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2. Wonder if any other dev will pick up the IP.

While it could cause it to lose its distinctive magic it may be better off. A more stable game engine, any number other improvements could be brought in by a fresh dev. It remains to be seen if the publisher, thq I think, passes what exists of stalker 2 onto one of their other studios.

I feel so lost! Lost Alpha will be the only thing to really look forward to now. I'm sure someone might consider picking it up. Let's just hope it's not someone like EA...

EA is a publisher and considering the amount of studios under the EA Umbrella it could do the IP some good.

The words 'closure' and 'cancellation' together with GSC and Stalker could only be heard in the silent echoes of my most unsettling nightmares. Now one of those nightmares is threatening to materialise in what I call reality. I will reserve judgement until an officially released statement from GSC, which will hopefully happen today, but I think it's safe to say that, from a number of sources, things do not sound very promising.

So in the meantime, here's a link to a fantasy panty (a bit pricey though):

Well they tweeted that they have problems and will try keep the flame alive but the future is uncertain.. I just cant accept their total closure! We will do everything we can to help.

God I hope not. I love Bethesta but they dont know FPS. Id much rather someone like the chaps who made Metro pick it up.

I kinda agree. I love Bethesda's games too, but I'm afraid they'd bring too much U.S. of A to the zone, if you know what I mean. 4A Games would be a near-perfect fit, but as far as I can gather, some issues of pride might prevent them from collaborating with GSC to develop a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game. If there is indeed still a hatchet to be found between them, I wish they'd just bury it and develop the sequel they were destined to create together.
