GTX 780 vs AMD Radeon 7990

Hi Everyone.

I was wondering what graphics card you would rather have. The 7990 has dropped in price in the US and is a similar price to the GTX 780. If the pricing extends to South Africa what would you rather get, considering the power consumption and benefits of having an AMD or nVidia GPU.

Thanks Everyone.

HD7990, without a doubt. And the price drops will come here and the drivers will continue to extend the reach of the frame-pacing fixes.

I like the enthusiasm :) I suppose the real question is how long will it take to drop? Should I wait?

Food for thought:

Two 7970s, rather?

The driver issues have apparently been sorted out with the release of the new beta drivers. The only reason I was considering the 7990 over two 7970's (and the GTX 780) is because of the huge price drops in America. I'm praying the price drops will reach SA and soon!

As a current CF owner (only 5870s, mind you), I can confirm the beta drivers have (mostly) sorted the framerate drop issues. Drivers still need some maturing, but that's the pain you go through as an ATI owner.

The heat thing bugs me a lot, though, especially if you do at some stage want to run CF'ed 7990s - and I'm pretty sure you do ;D

Still, definitely better value-for-money than the 780... One hopes Nvidia will respond and drop the price of the 780s!

I would definitely want the put these in CrossFire! (If I could afford that). Hopefully putting a water-block on the 7990 will sort the problem out, as by the time I want to get another one there should be some available water-blocks for these monsters.

I am running Asus 7970 Matrix cards in CF and honestly the drivers have made a HUGE improvement.
In fact I can't think of any time in the history of me running sli or cf that drivers have made such a huge impact on the over all smoothness and performance.

I am still against paying anything more than R6000 for a single gpu which is why I think its a waste considering the AMD drivers have been sorted and for a bit more money you can get a 7990 malta card that stomps on a 780 and a titan.

I should say that Nvidia drivers at the moment are pretty shitty and the latest beta was a disaster.
Tons of game crashes and "Driver stopped working" messages.

So you think I should spend a bit more on the 7990? What about watercooling (GPU) blocks and the heat issues? Should I just stick to the 780...has a lot of nice features like that game recording thing :)

I would recommend waiting. AMD's holding an event in September to discuss their future and the price drops will be here soon. I don't know when exactly, but an AMD rep told me they were talking to local suppliers and retailers about it. The GTX780 is a great buy if you don't want multi-GPU hassles, but its massively overpriced here.

I think I will take the plunge with the 780 as I want that performance over the 770. I don't really have time to wait though...hopefully the prices don't drop straight after I buy mine...:)

Well if they do fall, you'll still have one of the fastest single-GPU cards ever made :) I hope it serves you well.
