GTX280 overheating

ok thanks for the info man. Dirt2 have issues with GFX cards. I heard it make your fan stop and card running 110C+

I just found out that i don't have any warranty left. i'm going to get myself a 120MM fan and Cable tie it to the card. i hope that will bring the temps down a bit

110C+ would definatly be overheating, the threshold for the cards is 115C if I recall, at which point they shut off.

Even if you still had warranty left, you would have voided it when changing the thermal paste. The silicon based pastes though will only give you very marginal improvement in temps, if any. You really want a silver based one. Arctic Silver obviously being every overclockers friend, is always a good choice, I think Antec also has a silver based compound that's easier to get locally. If you do go with this stuff though, be careful as its conductive and a stray drop on your mobo or cards and you'll short-circuit them.
 
MSI came back to me and said that they going to setup the exact system that I have and then see if they can fix the problem and get back to me.

I just love MSI support. They are freaking good

I picked up that problem in Dirt2. it Pushes up your temps for nothing, stop's the VGA card fan, and then it after a little while locks up yout pc completely. No matter what graphic settings you run the game on...

My Solution was: Stoped playing the game until there is a patch to solve the problem.

So, note to all If you Really want to burn out a VGA card atm Install Dirt2.
 
Dang, was hoping someone had a good solution to the GTX280 heat issue. Well, non-issue, but at least some way to get -10' or summin. Prophecy said they didnt stock those awesome atrtic coolers anymore coz o lack o interest.

found a fix for my issue. now it's running 80C 10min furmark on standard settings. What i did was loaded msi afterburner and lower the voltages from 1.18 to 1.075 and running it overclocked to 690MHz GPu clock and 1280 memory also put the fan on auto fully stable 10min furmark on 1920x1080 16AA settings and that was on a very hot day.

I dunno whether to laugh or cry.

So MSI released an OC edition of the card, BUT, they did a crap job overclocking the card by setting the volts excessively high.

I wonder if they just erred on the side of safety by setting the volts that high, since no two pieces of hardware ever overclock identically. Still, 1.18 to 1.075 is quite a jump down in volts.

It's not just msi it's every dam brand. I think Nvidia did a bad job on there cards but I think thosos ATI card that also have overheating problems have also this voltage problem. every card is set to 1.18v and you can lower it to about 1.06.

It's just MSI that is so cool to be stable at 1.075V on that settings.

I have a ATI Radeon 4870x2 that also over heated to degrees between 79 - 95 degrees , and then you would really hear that blower going at full speed , really annoying.
I bought a arctic cooler mod for my screen card from prophecy shop and installed it. The card idles on 35 degrees now and never goes over 50 degrees Celsius.
It voids your warranty but well worth it. very quiet too !
 
but does it cools the vrm? I heard that with that arctic cooler the VRM temps gets really high well thats with the gtx280 cooler so thats a no go. but I already fixed my problem and my pc is super stable so I don't have to spend money cooling my card.

in one review the guy also replaced the memory cooling with some zalman and then with the stock one and still it's getting overheated so that cooler sucks big time. i thought of getting the Thermaltake one but still to expensive. rather save somem oney and get a new card but since this card haas been fixed I'm happy with my card for now.

well if you have any issues in the future , get some arctic silver thermal paste and replace the current thermal paste with that , and its not even that expensive.

I have seen the reviews for the arctic cooler on your card , im glad to hear that your machine is stable now .
Arctic cooler's performance is fantastic on the ATI Radeon , different strokes for different folks i guess.

If push comes to shove there's always watercooling :)
 
I've been hunting for a water cooler block for the GTX280 that covers the VRam too, *sigh only in the States or UK, no chance down here . . .
 
Download new driver's from ur manufacture of ur card n not from nvidia website, sometime's they tweak the driver's. My card idle's below 50 degrees. around 42 - 45 with the manufacture's driver n tried the same driver's from nvidia website n i idle at 55 degrees. So try the manufacture's driver's. I got a gtx 260
