GTX580: is it a good enough card?

if i hadn't went sli 460's this would have been tops of my to buy list

but as it stands frank, i'm very happy :)

What i am saying is that the SLI GTX460's is ass good if not better that even a GTX580. These GTX460's are the shit. really awesome card!

yep. Loving them. plus check the unigine bench thread...

i made a hash of it with my previous run...

I saw that. haha. I have not installed that yet. I had it on and the formatted my machine and never bothered with it again. I will install it again when i have a break from black ops. haha

Well I'm on the flipside of the coin here. I am still sitting with GTX280s, which have 1GB memory and stuck with DX10. For me to go with GTX460 is silly, because I like the idea of having more video RAM available, so the GTX460's are 1GB cards as well I think? So no upgrade in that department then. The GTX580 is definitely faster than a GTX480, which means it's faster than my current GTX280 SLi setup. It has more RAM (+1), runs cooler than a GTX480 (+1) and is a great replacement for my dual card setup. And in future when the prices come down even more, I might even buy a 2nd one....then I'll have GTX580s...in SLi :D

That said. If you own a GTX480, then buying this card makes no sense. If you have GTX460's in SLi, then good for you - but remember to compare that to GTX580s in SLi. Apples with Apples folks.

Well those are completly different cards and different price ranges. 2x of these cards are less then the price of 1x GTX580. When it is time to upgrade the GTX680 will be out. And then i will get 2 of those. Each to his own though. the GTX460's still remain faster then a single 580.

Well then I'll just get seven GTX980s! Also, my dad can beat up your dad! :p

Uhm....I don't know if you saw the reviews, but a single GTX580 kicks a GTX460 SLi setup in the crotch?

in all the reviews i saw the performance gains were not enough to justify even considering to change from a dual 460 setup

This card is a monster. No contest between it and a 460 SLi setup. I mean, a GTX460 SLi setup is slower and is limited to 1GB of video RAM, so it won't help me play games at 2560x1440. Where as the GTX580 is faster AND sports 1.5GB of Video RAM to give that extra push during high-res gaming sessions.

Also, if you consider a GTX460 SLi setup is slightly over R4000, this card is slightly over R5000 - so even cost can't sway my opinion.

This card is IT for me.

I dont see in that review where they compare the GTX460 1gb SLI with the GTX580. Its not there. There is a GTX465 SLI there and a GTX450 SLI there but no GTX460 SLI there. A bit confused.

This is what i have found so far.

GTX460 sli GTX580 GTX580 sli

Bad Company 2 84 67 108
Far Cry 2 144 104 164
Crysis Warhead 69 62 90
Vantage 24758 24848 38641

My opinion it is not worth changing my setup right now for a GTX580. Maybe later i could have a GTX580 SLI setup. For now i will just stick with what i have. For you Neo, if you have the money go for a GTX580. A little expensive but each to their own.

Do you remember what the GTX480 cost when it was released? Some places sold some of them for close to R8000. This card is selling, at launch, close to R5000. It's not that bad actually :)

It is not bad at all. you are right. If i were going to buy now instead of 2 months ago i probably would have bought a GTX580. But whats done is done and i am happy with my choice.

Yeah dude you can't look back in the GPU industry. That's why I waited patiently for this card to come around. And I'll bet you R100 that in 5 months time there WILL BE a GPU faster than this one released. Lol - it's one of those things.

ja dude. that is why i am content with my choice at the moment. As for something faster the 6970 will probably be faster than the GTX580 and they will probably bring out a GTX585 which will be a duel card.

2 things I've learned:

1. I prefer Nvidia over ATi because I like the idea of having proper PhysX support.
2. Never ever buy a dual-card from Nvidia - they just don't work lol
