Guild Wars 2 TBA 2010/2011

Yep, the date is to be expected. ANet / PlayNC's betas (and most other franchises) release their betas when the game is pretty close to final release, so I would expect the beta to come in 2010 as well.
I can only the imagine the QQ on some forums due to this 'new' date though.

At least it will disspell the Vaporware people and shut them up for good. They were getting annoying.

Look how long Blizzard took to make WoW (3 years iirc?), a MMO takes years to develop, design and test. It is a strenuous and very expensive exercise.

Lets hope they release enough material and content in GW though to keep the players playing...
The base has been on a downward spiral since the original GW2 announcement.

I would have thought that a beta would be followed by a full release relatively shortly. Just look at Dawn of war II and Star Craft II.

However, given that it is an MMO, it is not that surprising and is probably a good thing

i shall be the short furry things and call everyone bookahs!! wooot gw FTW (wow still beat sits ATM though)

Isn't that what I said?

IMO - The only reason for a beta is to have a bigger test group from outside your normal closed alpha test group and have some thorough QA done, since the closed test group cannot always test everything, especially the huge amount of iterations and possibilities that a larger test group allow.

Just to basically iron the last bit of bugs, patches, updates, etc. Then it is released.
Marketing and such play big roles too, there are quite a lot of factors. Look at Darkfall for instance, they have been delayed again till the end of February by essentially marketing issues and are testing in a closed beta testing group atm.

I for one am quite bummed. I was really looking forward to this since I gave up Guild Wars a while back.

A Letter to Our Fans

NCsoft responds:

A Letter to Our Fans

To our fans,

There have been some published rumors over the past few days about Guild Wars 2 delays, and I'm writing you today to set the record straight.

You've all seen announcements about restructuring at NCsoft West, and it's natural to wonder whether that restructuring impacts ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 development. In fact, the reason NCsoft West is restructuring itself is so that the company can put all of its focus into its top-tier games like Guild Wars 2. Our team continues to grow, and has the strong support and financial backing we need to achieve our goal of making Guild Wars 2 the best online role-playing game ever created.

On Friday, NCsoft released investor materials that showed a very broad release window for Guild Wars 2, with the explanation that release timing is still "to be announced." ArenaNet has never given a release date for Guild Wars 2 other than "when it's done." NCsoft's investor materials are a reflection of that philosophy.

I know some fans had hoped for a smaller gap between the launch of Guild Wars: Eye of the North and the start of beta testing for Guild Wars 2, but we communicated last summer that it would be some time before we could commit to any beta or launch dates. Guild Wars 2 is a large and ambitious game, and we're going to take the time to do it right.

I'm immensely proud of what our team has accomplished and continues to accomplish with the development of Guild Wars 2. We'll have a lot more to say when we're closer to release. Until then, we thank you for your continued interest and ask you to stay tuned.

Mike O'Brien

Im glad for their part.
I was a avid GW player for 3 years but then my friends stopped logging on and no one wanted to join the missions so I uninstalled and have only missed it a couple of times.

Well if they are publishing financial planning documents that reflect a 2010 or even 2011 release, then I still don't see it dropping this year.

No way it is going to drop this year.

In the original announcement they said it will be 2008/2009 but they pushed this date out relatively quickly to 2010 when they realised the amount of work that was involved with what they wanted to accomplish for GW2.
This is why EotN was released to keep players busy and this year they also announced some additional schedules / projects for GW1, to keep the players tied over.

They are trying to limit the churn of players by adding additional resourcse to GW1 for the current player base. I am quite interested to see what is going to be in the first content release for this year.

It is inevitable that there will be players leaving regardless, as other / newer games are released, etc.

Damn straight... and funnily enough, NEW people are still joining as well on a daily basis.
*amazing, yet arb fact*

The link in the article is not working, so I posted it for TM's attention in the suggestions thread quickly...

Anyway, I am surprised the numbers that are being signed up for GW is so high, 920 000 accounts were activated from Dec 2007 to Dec 2008. That's more than 200 000 accounts every quarter.
Granted between Dec 2006 to Dec 2007 1.75 million accounts were activated.

Anyway, 5.8 million activated accounts is not bad at all.

On their site they made a statement regarding the financial forecast which essentially comes down to the game will be done "when it's done". Not exactly comforting words I'd say.
