Guild Wars 2

Good point you made there, most people (other existing MMO players) will not give a game a chance again after a dissappointing Beta experience.

My theory is that Alvin and the Ship Monks will be revealed that they still exist :O, they turned to the evil side and are supporting Zhaitan and the other elder dragons. They are preparing Life Barrier on the dragons; stole Shadow Form from the assassins, have Grenth's Balance ready and made the Elder Dragons a huge force to be reckoned with! ......

Yeah< I dont really know soz

hear me out. look at alot of recent mmo's, beta impressions were horrible, then people unable to get rid of those assumptions went into the finished product still bearing those grudges and the game sucked, then failed for them, usually ending in a sunk product.

APB comes to mind...

so! in closing A-Net will not be giving us a beta like we know.

we'll get a preview weekend at most a week or two before release like we did Factions and Nightfall.

essentially the complete and ready product, just enough to wet our appetites even more, then boom release!

I think ANet will go a similar route to what NCSoft did - and do an open beta at most a month before final release - with maybe a week or two pre-release for those that pre-order or get CEs. Aion was very close to a finished product by the time they started the beta - and to be fair - extensive beta testing for any product that gets released these days is a must.

There's no ways the devs or even game testers can cover every possibility that players can come up with 5 minutes after entering a game - it's like we're genetically programmed to break things.

ANet has said there will be a beta, and they have said they're doing it very close to release so they can wow us. So as soon as they announce a beta, we can expect a release date fairly shortly afterwards.

Granted Shadowfox, Aion was out in Korea for almost a year by the time our beta's started up hey.

but back to GW2, beta yes. but very shortly before release.

not a 6 months ahead of schedule thing like normal. no.

preview weekend thing like we got with gw 1's stuff

That's also true - it was mostly localisation testing - but they didn't run a massive beta before release in Korea either. Their open beta started 11 November 2008 - and the game was released on the 25th of the same month.

Closed beta was a good while before that ... 2007 I think, but closed beta tends to be a lot more limited anyway.

I have mixed criticism to words "MMO" and "open beta" together. Let they make it closed beta -- means, it will be limited, drop a hope that we can play it in South Africa.

On one side, it will give ability to finish up game, fix bugs, balance, add more GUI items, etc.

On other side, there are some games that are "open Beta" and had Pay2Excel model to support development, which was fine by then, but then it turned into further business: added items, without which it is impossible to play in full power (let me describe it: a 1 day effect, that increases HP by 33%. Before that update, characters had 33% more health -- and been decreased after update. To increase HP, just by a potion for real cash) and need real cash investment. Further, they added very bad permanent effects received upon adventures in game world, that need to be rectified only by items acquired from real cash shop.

Lets hope that GW2 won't turn to that.

I think we can say with a fair amount of confidence they won't. And I'm sure closed Beta - if they do go the route, will be available down here. They cared enough to send a couple of reps down to demo (even though it was a shell of the demo's they had at PAX) - they know they have a market down here, even if it isn't a massively big one.

I know Aion never did anything of the kind (what you're describing above) - I took part in their closed beta as well as the open beta - ANet tends to be a lot more enlightened about these things, and I don't see them doing something even NCSoft had the sense to avoid.

Most likely, that they won't implement it -- this may ruin the userbase and whole thing.

In above case, possibly this was user's fault -- developers have seen, that extremely large amount of users liked to invest real cash into their accounts and decided to implement this thing. Anyway, users like investing...

I dont like to spend "invest", but I also dont get why people would want to play well known games on 'Private Servers'.... Go pay for the real thing if you like the game so much!

Therefore I love Guild Wars for how it is implemented. I have been upset with the Tranmutation Stones, but have been calmed with the fact that they will not use the Item shop to give game play advantages. If there is the slightest smell of something like that or Pay to Play model, then I will leave the game entirely.

The big reveal arrived, and it's not what you think!
wait for it!

Guild Wars 2 will sell you more dungeons | PC Gamer

that's right folks, paid for dlc based dungeons

Lead Game Designer Eric Flannum, while discussing the upcoming dungeon system in a recent interview with PC Gamer, revealed that Guild Wars 2 will be supported, in part, by microtransaction dungeon sales.

In discussing Guild Wars 2’s business model–which continues the stand-alone, subscriptionless model of the original that required players to purchase the game, but not pay a monthly fee afterward–Flannum told us that he believes subscription fees can cause a developer to get lazy, because they’re making money whether they actually support the game or not. He continued, “The thing I would say [about not having a subscription fee] is that we actually have the continued support development model that encourages us to make cooler things than anyone else… If we have to sell you additional content like microtransaction content or anything like that, we have to give you something that you’re going to want to buy. We have to earn your money.

“We don’t get to say oh well, you know ‘We don’t have to release this content this month, since they’re all going to give us their subscription fee anyways. Let’s just wait until next month and release this cool thing.’ We’re actually kind of bound because if we need income, if we need this game to make some money, we better provide things that people want to buy.”

“There are not many subscription-fee games that have equaled [what we've put out for the original Guild Wars since Prophecy shipped] so I think our content model ensures that you’re getting your money’s worth, because as the consumer you have the option to say ‘You know, I’m not going to buy that. That’s not good enough.’ Whereas the monthly fee [business model] takes it out of your hand. You better be getting something good every month for that–but that’s just not the case with a lot of games.”

We asked Flannum point blank if they would be releasing more dungeons post-launch that would be purchased as microtransaction purchases. Flannum confirmed to us that they’re definitely open to the idea–and more. “Yeah, we’re going to look at what the demand is. Look at what players want more of and we’re going have to release that stuff because that’s the stuff that players are going to be willing to pay for and that’s the stuff that’s going to make our company profitable.”
ArenaNet has already revealed that they’ll be selling Transmutation Stones, one-time consumable items used to customize your gear, in their cash shop. And although they won’t confirm if traditional cash shop items like XP boosts and fast travel consumables will also be sold, Flannum’s responses certainly makes it sound like there will be–if there’s demand for it from the playerbase.
But for now, ArenaNet has only confirmed that they’re planning to sell dungeon content as DLC and the transmutation stones. What do you think? Would you mind paying for an extra dungeon here and there if it means more fresh content coming out for GW2 on a regular basis, or would you rather they stick with the one-time-only payment and slow down development between expansions?

my first reaction was well, awesome!

extra content to keep the game going, i dunno about you, but extra stuff to do while keeping the game active sounds like WIN! to me.
dunno about you ou's and ladies but i love this idea

I don't mind ... I don't think they're going to take GW2 the same route as they did with GW, with stand alone campaigns, and pretty much every game is doing DLC now. And they're right - they have to support the game somehow.

well... seems pcgamers nutter jumped the gun straight to conclusions

I wanted to clear up some misunderstandings coming from the article. We talked to Eric, and he said the following:

Hey there, after reading the PC Gamer article I wanted to make sure that we clarified a few things. First, we haven’t decided on what exactly we are or aren’t going to offer for money post release. My answer to the dungeons question was meant to say “we’re open to whatever our players seem most interested in.”
If after release you guys would like more story content, more dungeons, more events, more maps or whatever it’s something that we have to consider because ultimately making you happy is what makes us successful. Whether we release that in DLC (like the bonus mission packs in GW1) or whether we do it through expansions (Like Eye of the North) is yet to be determined. As to whether or not there are going to be items like XP boosts available in the in game store I can only reiterate what we’ve said before (and will continue to say) that we’ll release details on it when they are available and that our core philosophy--of not requiring you to spend additional money to play the game and not making the game difficult or painful to play in order to encourage you to buy things from the store--still stands.

In short: We have not made a decision on whether to sell dungeon content as DLC, contrary to what the article states. The author of the article jumped to this (incorrect) conclusion based upon his interpretation of Eric's statements.

Like Eric said in the article and in his statement above, we will look at what the demand is from the players.

Worse reveal of GW2 ever :)

Anyhow, yeah they have to keep the game running, so its to be expected stuff like this.

But, I wouldnt like having to be asked : "Want to do Ololosafars Lab with us?" and then to answer : "Dudes no sorry I dont have access to it!". If its more an expansion type (or more than 5 dungeons as a package for example) it would be 100% fine, they should just not split it too much.

If it is similar to expansions like "EoTN" or "Battle Mission Pack" in GW1, adding a pack of items, then fine. Will not like single item per pack though..

Well ... we do kinda run into situation already with all the expansions :) Me and a couple of Alliance mates went to vanquish an area in Nightfall the other night, and the one guy in the group turned out not to have NF. It'll happen with any kind of DLC/Expansion - nothing forces one to buy it, but getting it gives you more to enjoy, more to explore etc - the benefits are there.

If they do go the DLC route for dungeons, I expect that they won't have any major impact on the main storyline.

Going slowly lol, mini pets are expensive, I bid on a few on the GWG auctions. I need money! Titles wont be a problem, it will get completed eventually. Stuff like completing UW / DOA / Deep / Urgoz would be harder though; I need all those statues.

Just stumbled with my progress at 28/50. Already got armbrace, and some pieces for armors. Just need better internet (so, waiting for Cell C in Joburg), because everyone gets nervous, when I disconnect in middle of DoA run. BTW, DoA can be completed fast by Glaiveway. Any profession can partake there.
