Guild Wars 2

They won't send out beta invites until the end of March.

And even if I got in, if I told you, I'd have to kill you :p

I'm sure you'd tell us. I think you'd tell everyone :p all the time! I know I would. Like this: I just got in the D3 beta!!

So I'm busy making a website for the Guild Wars 2 SA community. Hopefully I will get the design sorted this week and then start on the actual coding.

Here is one of the headers for the site.

Just right click the image and view in new tab. Mygaming needs to add some sort of image resize ability like

Nice graphic, although what do you mean by coding? Sure for something like this you want to be using a CMS like droopal or maybe even wordpress.

Even using a CMS like Wordpress (I've never used Drupal, but I'd assume it's the same), you'll probably want to dive into the back-end and theme files and change a couple of things.

I have used Wordpress for many of my clients, but I don't like making themes for Wordpress, Drupal or Joomla. I hate going through thousands of lines of CSS and code and files to create a custom theme for the CMS.

I don't want to design my theme around a CMS I want to design my theme and website template and have the CMS plugged into it.

That is why I am going to use Concrete5.

I can design the site add all the nice features I want with coding and CSS done the way I want it and then just add the PHP snippets to the areas that will change and also set my own custom areas for posts and pages. It also offers the ability to edit the website live and no need to go into the backend, but you can still go into the backend if you wish to do so.

EDIT:

I will probably also be using LESS it is a adaptive CSS language that offers variables, the same a PHP, where I can set variables and when I need to change something on a global scale in the CSS, I just have to edit the variable and it makes the changes for me.

Normal CSS
#header {
color: #4D926F;
}
h2 {
color: #4D926F;
}

LESS
@color: #4D926F;

#header {
color: @color;
}
h2 {
color: @color;
}

But right now my biggest worry is getting the menu just right...

Here is some progress on the Guild Wars 2 SA site.

Didn't get much done since I have 2 clients websites to deliver...

But here is a screenie of some additional stuff that were added to the design. I'm still not too sure about my menu, but will post more on that at a later stage. The menu only shows what the item will look like once it is selected and then a drop down menu for submenu items.

EDIT:
You can view the rest of the header images here

Look your designs look good but the problem is you are just replicating the official Guild Wars 2 website. People aren't going to go to the gw2sa site to find out info about the game, there are far better places to do that, they go there to be part of the community.

To reiterate this isn't, or at least shouldn't be, a site about the game it should be a site about the South African community. Hence what should be up there are things like local guilds, get-togethers, planned events and any other community features the guys want to get going. Just putting up game facts is a pointlessly redundant exercise.

One of the reasons I'm not too sure about my menu yet. Also why I posted it is to get feedback.

I feel that some information about the game should be on the local site, this might change and the menu will too, I did include a section for the guilds and other additions are still being talked about, as this is only a design and not a working website yet, changes can be made quite easily and even after it is finished changes can still be made to refine the website and community features.

Thanks for the feedback.

We created a thread for suggestions on the site for those who would like to contribute their feedback, constructive criticism and suggestions for the website and community features.

Check it out here

hmmmmmm 'We know you're very eager for us to send out beta invitations, and we will be sending these confirmations out shortly'

In just over 48 hours, 1 million players signed up for a chance to participate in upcoming Guild Wars 2 beta events. Although we wish we could invite everyone who signed up to playtest the beta, we do have a limited number of slots available for each event and not everyone will be able to play. We know you're very eager for us to send out beta invitations, and we will be sending these confirmations out shortly.

In the meantime, we've prepared a little thank you for all those who applied - a brand new video that features never-before-seen in-game footage.

Just head over to the Guild Wars 2 Facebook page and "Like" us to watch the video! Thanks for your support, and we'll see you in game!

Thank you vid
