Handling new MyGaming forum members

Yeah.

What constitutes thread necro, what time frame of dormancy - for lack of a better word? 1 month? 2 months? 5 days?

If there is a necro I feel that something relevant and new should be added to the discussion.

Personally if I really want to say something about a game or topic, and there's an old thread that is relevant, I think it's ok to resurrect it if it's really something worth saying, although I do usually say sorry for the necro, but this is really the best place to say this....

Generally if someone has the decency to start their post with "Sorry for the necro", you know it's someone with a bit of sense that's probably going to contribute in a meaningful way.

Sorry guys, i posted that. been her about a week.... didn't mean to cause any trouble, or to screw up.

Don't make the mistake to feel like u HAVE to contribute here dude, the forum is here to contribute to u as well, this is where u come for answers, this is where u come to learn more, I guess the only thing u need to do is make sure that IF u have something to add make sure its at the right place, relevant to the subject at hand and try to make it contribute, and even if it doesn't, don't leave just keep sucking up all the info u can get from the guys who do know. U should feel welcome here, cuz some day someone will come here asking a question and u will have the answer and we will stfu and suck in the info ;) I am a noob of note with this hole forum, I do not have many years gaming experience, and I only really have experience with one game, the only gaming terms I know is GL HF GG WP. But I am a grown man with life experience in the real world and there I know I can contribute, but that is why I am here same as u, to learn from these gosu motherfcukers!

WTF does Necro even mean? And I am a bit lost on the "if the post if 5 days old its ok" and so on. I posted a thread earlier that I didn't know existed cuz I could not find it, it was about our occupations etc. So I was then directed to one that already exists but it has 111 pages, I really just don't have the time to read 111 pages and still read what ever else that is relevant to me that has just been posted. So what would I do in that case?

Search. Aaaaaalways search. However, if you were to ask me where the search button is....

My personal rule of thumb is that if a thread has been dead for more than a month it's probably not ok to post unless there's a pretty good reason for it. Spotting the date the last poster posted at is pretty easy.

I think what gets most of the older members railed up is that people rock up on the forum for competitions, find (somehow) a thread that's been dead for a while (the most extreme case I've seen personally was something like 8 months since the previous post), and post something ridiculous along the lines of "HAHA I agree".

The exception of course is if what you're posting is relevant to the topic at hand, and whether it is worth reviving the thread for - the first question you should probably ask yourself is whether what you're posting will be worth reading for anyone coming back to the thread. If you have any doubts, it's probably better just to start a new topic.

If someone decides to hassle you for necro-ing a thread, or posting something that's already been posted before, just PM them and explain that you didn't know - if they're halfway decent about it they should at least respond positively. If, however, you feel the responding person is being unnecessarily hostile, pop James a PM and get him to sort it out - avoid fighting in threads if you can.

If you're really not sure, send someone like Sycogrim a PM and ask him. He obviously doesn't have anything better to do with his life :p

Some definitions from Urbandictionary. Definition seems sound so I'll post them.

1. necroposting
On a message board, posting something irrelevent on a really old topic to bring it to the top of the list topics. name comes from the fact that you are bringing it back from the dead, thus Necro. a practice common among n00blars.

2. necropost
to post in a thread that has been "dead", by being inactive for a relatively long period.

The big issue with necro posting is not just the date but also the content. When people get annoyed is when to post is pretty pointless.

My general idea is if you necro a thread can your post stand alone. I.e can I copy your post and start an entirely new thread using what you posted, so saying "lol I agree" as an OP doesn't work. Thus if you have new info it can stand alone but just as easily be extended to an existing thread and revive the convo.

But that's not the only rule, in off topic it can just be something relevant. IE we had a coffee thread, it was dead for like a month and I made a post about regarding the Local campus coffee shop. That gained no hate since it moved on with other specials like the BP coffee mug thing.

So my 2 rules are:
>Can you start a discusion on your post or,
>Is it relevant to the OP and of interest to someone

Thread necros can be done correctly and my best current example is the careers thread, Mr Beast is looking to network so add your 2c to the necroed thread.

Necro means dead, necromancy is black magic used to raise something from the dead, either as a spirit or lich (aka zombie or other undead creature), so necroposting is posting in a dead thread and so bringing a thread back to live that should have been long dead.

Kind of goes against the other rule about checking if a thread exists before starting a new thread, but you kind of get a feel for what you should and shouldn't revive.

Hope that clears things up

Based on the discussion of necroposting... I'm going to what 6 months before posting that I agree "whistling:

Another friendly hint for newbies; if you write 'u' because it's shorter than 'you,' most people are going to skip reading your post because it's shorter than taking the time to read it.

Please don't say 'u.' :(
