Have consoles held back PC gaming?

It helped gaming in that way but with regards to graphics and engine power I'd say consoles held back pc gaming. I think we are going to see a great leap in what games look like, even on pc now that everything doesn't have to be scaled back for older consoles.

I'm seeing a lot of this. How games are going to look going forward. Look at Tomb Raider with the face lift for PS4 and PC. Are you really going to get it just because it looks better? I guess for those who didn't have the privilege to play yet will. But for those of us who did, it makes no sense.

How many of the current-gen games are going to have the next-gen equivalent? And how many will be just the same, but better looking?

Devs should start focusing on giving us games that last. That make us think. That keeps us busy. As DieGrootHammer mentioned, Gameplay is another aspect. Its like they're just moving more and more away from this and looking to see how good they get a game to look when they develop something new.

I definitely think consoles have held back PC gaming. But unfortunately, were that not the case, I don't think I would be able to afford the kind of PC one would need to play games that utilise the full potential of today's PC's. Consoles have a good few years in them and you always know the games you're buying will work. That is why I love consoles.

I see merit in consoles, even though I don't own one.

But one thing that always annoys me is that I suspect that they are the main reason for the slow decline of the RTS genre. It's just too tricky to port to console (the controls aspect) imo. And I never enjoy other genres as much as I enjoy RTS.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does RTS stand for? Real time simulation? As in The Sims, SimCity etc?

Nope. Real time Strategy. As in Warcraft 3, Command and Conquer Series, Age of Empires series etc. Please do not put Sims in that category :P (Sims is a pet hate of mine).

Yes mostly, but also with game mechanics/engine etc.

I'm no game dev, but surely PC processing power allows for more complex engine design and features, and this will also be held back.

Not to mention PC input is not limited by the buttons on the console controller. We already see how this blatantly puts PC users at a disadvantage with examples like Skyrim and Oblivion, which had crappy inventory management, solved somewhat by mods on PC, while Morrowind's inventory still is way ahead.

You did play half life 2, right?

Compared to what was before it came out it already improved a lot on mechanics, design and graphics. I don't see star citizen being hold back, do you?

OMG I am botheredz by how it looks ugh ugh guh gah kakkas. lol.

You been whipped

HOWEVER... you are correct in a sense. Most developers dev consoles first and that base code is reused for the pc.

Is it still viable to dev for the PC as a primary platform? I would say yes, but what are you pushing out? Is it kak? Is it just a tech demo? There is a good reason why Indie and Kickstarter has taken off like it did.

When it comes to FPS/Action/Sport and some sims, yes consoles are holding the PC's back but only because most of the developers target quantity over quality, I am looking at you EA!!!

Haha my apologies :P. I've never given it much thought but now that you've mentioned it there's definitely been a decline in the genre. I think it is also due to the fact that these kind of games struggle to find success on consoles and most developers won't risk making PC exclusives anymore.

There is no shortage in strategy, sure the mainstream seems to die out but I doubt that has anything to do with PC vs console and a lot more to do with people wanting braind dead quick fix games.

On that note I am looking forward to new Men of War Assault squad that is 35 days away: http://store.steampowered.com/app/244450

Sore point for me and Bf4 dude, wow. Getting more pissed off by the day. Part of me just wishes they had left out current gen consoles and just pushed for PC and next gen. Would've been better and maybe made the game more stable. Just another example why (cur gen)consoles hold back games.

My 2c - I for one really appreciated console "holding back" PC gaming. I don't have the money to upgrade my PC every few years and partly because of the current gen console cycle I've been able to play most games on high settings since getting my PC upgrade in 2009.

You do realise I'm not putting every PC game under one blanket right?

There's no need to be so hostile.

No one is being hostile.

I'm just surprised that even though you have played hl2 you failed in seeing that that title already brought to the table that which you said is lacking.

Hence you are whipped by worries of candy.

You know what is Holding pc gaming back is the complexity of developing for a broad range of power levels if developers could target the top end our minds would blow, but so would their bank accounts.

If you have even dough to upgrade your pc system from time to time, you will never need a console, unless you want to play the exclusives!

Because no one would buy it.

Also @Necuno, consoles do sadly limit the growth of PC gaming in the sense that the greater demand is there, this does not, however, mean that either is superior to the other. PC gaming does a lot of things consoles do, better, and by a lot I mean everything.

:p

Except for the fact that developer have to use the shotgun approach when working on PC titles, instead of a sniper rifle.

You have such a huge target to hit when aiming for PC's that you end up missing a couple, and those you miss complain the hardest.

I recon game dev on Console vs PC it is very much like our mobile team. We target iOS 1st cause its a single target and way simpler to problem solve. Only once we happy with our application do we port to Android/Windows Phone cause of the mountains of problems you face when trying to find out why something misbehave on some systems.
